In 1892, the Bedford Heights Coast Guard Station was established by order of President Benjamin Harrison. The station became operational and served as a landing and water-defense location for the town. In 1928, the Coast Guard Station was relocated to its current location on Deer Park Boulevard in Bedford Heights. The station continues to serve as a vital part of the community today. The Coast Guard Station provides law enforcement services, public relations, maritime security and recreational opportunities for residents of Bedford Heights. Bedford Heights is a neighborhood in the city of Cleveland, Ohio. The population was 24,455 at the 2010 census. It is located in the northeast corner of Cleveland. The area now comprising Bedford Heights was first settled by Germans in 1812. In 1837, a group of Irish immigrants arrived and started to leave their cultivation of potatoes and other crops near Prospect Avenue for what would become Bedford Heights. In 1830, the village of Bedford was founded about two miles east of present-day Bedford Heights on land that had been donated by Simon Girty. The original village consisted only of a few buildings and no residents lived there until 1835 when it became the county seat for Cuyahoga County. The village prospered because it had connections with government services and because both Cleveland and Akron were growing rapidly at this time. The post office opened in 1840, and within 10 years, development had progressed to include some 22 buildings (10 single family homes, 10 frame houses). After being annexed by the City of Cleveland in 1874 as part of an effort to improve public transportation options within Cleveland's boundaries, much development occurred around oak tree Plaza which became one of downtown's most popular tourist destinations during its early days. This included annexation of adjoining estates along Prospect Avenue including those now forming Bedford Heights proper as well as neighboring Griggs Road/Willow Park/Rockwell Road NE., later renamed Willowbrook Drive after developer Milton Hershey purchased all but one acreage from John Dreyfus & Sons (now JDS Companies) in 1944 for $2 million . During World War II many businesses closed or shifted operations due to wartime shortages; however many others managed to stay open thanks to donations from their owners or friends . One such business that survived into postwar days was Pillsbury Doughnuts which relocated from Euclid Avenue across University Circle into what is now Elmwood Hills Shopping Center on Willoughby Rd./Bedford Ave./Kenilworth Rd./Northeast Blvd .. Development continued through the late 1950s with major projects such as Redevelopment Authority -anchored housing developments like Ridgeview Estates , Arlington Heights , Glenview Highlands and more new apartment complexes becoming available throughout town while small shops continued to close or move out following changes in fashion etc.; however by 1960 most people living in Bedford were long gone .. A few notable exceptions remained such as Stroud’s Department Store which reopened after a closure during prohibition era while also serving as home base for local band Yoko Ono ; Andy Warhol resided briefly atop his decal “ Factory” building during production runs at 216 S Cherry St.; however these events did not lead directly to significant change over time until recently when redevelopment began anew with many new properties opening up .. Many residents have kept active roles within community organizations like United Way since its creation back in 1945 including president Judy Baer who continues her work today along with Vice President Allan Schwartzman ..
