The name "Bedford" originates from an English title for a man who had conquered most of Ireland (the "Bedfordshire"), and so when land east of Canal Street was offered for sale in 1826, two men named Bedford bought it and began to develop it into a town. They named their new town after Lord Northampton (later King George III), 1st Viscount Bedford, who had given themImproved land near Newark, Delaware County free Range cattle on which they could till the soil and build homes. In 1827, John Richardson opened up what became Richardson's Mills on current day Canal Street just north of where the community developed. This mill produced flour for local breweries and also provided employment for many people during this early period; today it still stands as an example of Victorian architecture with its striking onion domes and tall chimneys. In 1828, General James Krieger arrived in America from Germany with his family and set about founding villages throughout central Ohio including Bedford Heights; Krieger's Village was founded just east of Canal Street off Highways 10 & 12 near today's Racine Mall parking lot). After years working together at different places Krieger eventually decided to settle down in what would become Bedford Heights as he saw it as his proper domain During Widespread Panic days on Saturday nights at The Observatory there were some great times had by all!
