Beachwood is a town in Holmes County, Ohio, United States. The population was 7,812 at the 2010 census. Beachwood is part of the Cleveland metropolitan area. The first Europeans to reach Beachwood were French traders and missionaries who explored the area in the 17th century. In 1813, American pioneers arrived and founded an agricultural community called Beavercreek on what is now Delaware Avenue in what is now Beachwood. The town name derived from that of a small body of water near where it stood. Beachwood quickly became a major commercial center with its location on the waterside giving it access to many resources such as seafood, lumber and cotton production which continued until well into the 20th century. During World War II, Beachwood served as an air harbor for strategic bombers during the war effort; afterward it developed into a bedroom community for Cleveland residents commuting to work in Cleveland or other cites within America. The town was founded in 1837 by Moses Beach and his wife Rebecca. In 1859, Isaac Beech settled in beachwood and became one of its first residents. The first post office in beachwood opened on December 12, 1837. In 1860, the name of the town was changed to Beachwood after Moses Beach's grandson, John A. Beach who had moved from Baltimore Maryland to live there with his family. In 1870-71, a railroad track ran through beachwood making it an important community for commerce and transportation during that time period. One of the early businesses open in beachwood was J & P Smith's grocery store which still stands today across from the high school on High Street near Central Park West. By 1900-01 when prohibition began to take hold throughout America many citizens turned against alcohol and voted against liquor sales within their own townships but continued to do so within Beachwood as well until prohibition ended nationwide two years later on November 8th1920 thanks to President Woodrow Wilson's executive order known as The New Deal which aimed to prevent such corrupt practices across America not only by government but also by private industry which had become rampant due to easy access to cheap booze brought over from Europe during these times Today much of what once made up beachWOOD has been replaced or destroyed leaving behind only a few buildings remaining standing among them being High School (built 1907) and Mrs Abrahams Store (1927). As technology advances along with new opportunities it seems likely that some form of redevelopment will occur for all or most of this now abandoned land eventually bringing back much needed life and economic viability back into beachWOOD though no definitive plans have yet been announced
