This docking area became known as "The Nick of Nicks" because of its many military vessels that stopped there for fuel or repairs during their travels up the Great Lakes. In 1824, Commodore John Gregg's grandson, Commodore George A. Gregg reopened the original Portsmouth Coffee House and began serving coffee to sailors at sea. This business continued until 1861 when Commodore George A. Gregg closed his store due to the American Civil War which disrupted maritime trade along the Great Lakes region. After Commodore George A. Gregg's store closed, local citizens started opening their own stores providing a larger variety of goods than what had been available at Captain John Gregg's store. These new businesses served as early examples of modern-day grocery stores with café seating inside for customers to dine while they waited for their purchase to be prepared and delivered to their doorsteps - an innovation that would later be copied by other businesses throughout Bay Area history (e.g., Safeway). By 1865, bayarea had 10+ merchant shops catering to different needs such as groceries and tea services; however these merchants did not share common interests or connect with one another through social events or networking like today’s cafes do online/phone chats etc.). Instead these merchants focused on catering to specific demographics through marketing materials such as advertising brochures mailed out directly to residents living within spitting distance of each establishment (i.e., neighbors). Merchants also created directory listings next door detailing products offered by various merchants within walking distance so residents could easily find what they were looking for without having to go outside and explore several blocks of business districts! It is interesting how these directories have survived intact over time because they were designed specifically for marketing purposes and not used any longer today!
