Bay, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Lucas County. The population was 33,824 at the 2010 census[1]. It is located on the southern shore of Lake Erie, about 20 miles (32 km) east of Cleveland and 40 miles (64 km) north of Toledo. Bay has been inhabited since Pre-Columbian times. The first permanent Europeans to visit Bay were French traders in the 17th century who traded with the Lenape Indians. In 1803, General Anthony Wayne's army passed through Bay on its way to victory against George Washington in Battle of Fallen Timbers; General Wayne named the post after his forces' victory there. The city was founded by John Richardson in 1825 as a port town on the west branch of what would become known as Erie Canal even before that body had completed its entire length from Cleveland to Buffalo.[2] Richardson built a wharf and some homes near what is now downtown Bayonne, and began shipping goods carrying flour, salt pork, beans and other items upriver from Canandaigua via Erie Canal to Detroit for shipment downriver to Cleveland.[3] By 1830 Bay had become an important commercial center,[4] with a population of over 1,000 people. The population grew rapidly during the late 19th century due to heavy industry and agricultural production within its borders.During World War I (1914-18), Bay participated in various campaigns including the Battle of Black Tom Creek which resulted in German losses at Wrightwood Plantation. After the war ended, bay experienced rapid growth with new businesses opening up such as a flour mill and meat packing plant. However during this time period crime rates were high and many people left town for better opportunities elsewhere.In 1948 Cleveland purchased all remaining assets from Putnam County for $2 million which led to increased development within the town while bringing much needed jobs to locals during this time period. Today Bay is known for its progressive values such as open government, sustainability initiatives and community engagement.
Bay City was founded by the Maumee Bay Company on December 5, 1814. The company traded goods with Great Lakes ports and made a fortune from shipping. In 1828, the company merged with another Michigan company, the Detroit and Toledo Railroad. The new company became known as the Detroit and Toledo Railway Company.
