Bay is a small town in the Kalkaska County, Michigan, United States. The population was 1,764 at the 2010 census. Bay is home to the headquarters of Oneida County and Bay State Correctional Facility. Bay was founded in 1814 by German settlers from Bayreuth, Bavaria. It became a village in 1857, and a town in 1907. In 1927 it became one of four townships within Kalkaska County. The township was disbanded in 2001 but continues to be represented on the county board of supervisors. The first settler in what would become Bay was Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz who arrived with his family on October 3, 1814 from Weimar-Bingen am Rhein, Germany. He named his new community after himself - "Bayreuth". bayreuth means "place where I landed" or "farmstead near Main Street". The original log homes were built between 1814-1816 by immigrants Johann Gottlieb Kreutzwald (1793-1867), Johann Friedrich Struve (1800-1868), Heinrich Büchel (1800-1869) and Samuel Loomis (1792-1872). They named their homes for places they had seen such as Brunswick, Saxony and Torgau. In 1827 Bay agreed to become part of the larger Michigan city of Detroit; however when that city's charter was revoked in 1830 Bay voted not to secede into Michigan but continue as an unincorporated community within Kalkaska County under its own governance which it retains to this day. Bay, Ohio is a town in Bay County, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,827 at the 2010 census. The first settler in what is now Bay was John Parkhurst on land he bought from the local Sauk tribe in 1795. The town of Bay was organized on November 3, 1802 by an act of the General Assembly as a part of the Miami Territory. It was named for Captain James Kettell's landing there on October 12, 1802. In 1825, it became part of the newly formed central government of Ohio and became known as "the metropolis" of that state because its population exceeded that of any other city or town in that territory. In 1831, Bay moved to its present site upstream from the bay and developed around two wharves used by shipbuilders and merchants shipping materials along the Miami River. Its growth continued until World War II when industry gave way to farming and today it has again become a major center for commerce and culture with many high-technology companies based there.
