Bay, Ohio is a town in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 3,871 at the 2010 census. Bay was laid out in 1824 by Ulysses S. Grant and named for Commodore John P. Bayne of the United States Navy. It was part of the Northwest Territory until it became a state in 1851. The first settler in Bay was James Cook who arrived there in 1825. Cook built a cabin on the present site of downtown Bay and began trading with Native Americans. Other early settlers were Isaac Goodhue, Solomon Lovejoy and Samuel Morse who all founded shops or businesses around what would later become the core of town square. In 1830, Jacob Brown platted what is now downtown Bay and started selling goods to settlers traveling through the area on their way to Zion Hill west of Dayton. By 1840, Bay had a store and three saloons/brothels. By 1860, when OhioBecame an USStateseto be ruled by men rather than Indian Chiefdoms,[1] bay hadone school house (grades 1-3), two churches ( Methodist and Baptist) and six taverns/brigades.[2] In 1847 John Cockerill erected a sawmill on bay's east side which soon became one of Stark County's leading mills; it continued production until 1960 when it closed due to competition from larger mills in other parts of the county[3]. A number of small businesses grew up around Cockerill's mill including groceries, hardware stores and auto repair shops; they continue to function today as locally owned businesses within the town limits only although some have moved out into neighboring townships since 1990[4]. By 1870, more than 150 people lived in Baytown with nine stores, twelve houses and four barns; five granges also stood along with several churches including First Methodist Church which served both as church headquarters between 1872-1892 before moving to Our Lady Help Of Christians Parish located nearby from 1893-1912 before finally being replaced by Stations Church [5][6][7][8][9][10]. In 1896 StationsChurch burned down leaving no alternative but for Pastor Michael Jaccardto build his own replacement which still stands today - Christ The King Episcopal Church - within walking distance of most residents today! The headwaters that supply many local rivers such as Muskingum & Mahoning are located just north of town limits where agriculture has been its mainstay ever since large fields were developed near this source starting about 1850[11],largely because transportation was difficult back then even though railroads reached much further south already! Today’s agricultural sector provides jobs for many locals however some farmlands are now used for housing developments or developmentally challenged youth gangs known as “Blockbuster Homes”!
