The Coast Guard has been providing support to the Bay area for over 100 years. In 1903, the first Coast Guard station was established in Bay City on the Ohio River. The Coast Guard played an important role in helping to keep our community safe during prohibition and during World War II. Today, the Coast Guard continues its support by providing a variety of services including search and rescue, maritime security, coastal surveillance, and law enforcement. In 1916, Bay City became one of six communities that were consolidated into the newly created town of Portsmouth in central Ohio. The first post office was established in Portsmouth in 1916 and mail service continued until 1922. In 1930, Portsmouth was renamed Bay City after Rear Admiral John Fenton Benson who had served as Commandant of the Marine Corps at Quantico from 1918-1920. During World War II, Bay City was home to both destroyer units (DE-5s) which patrolled along the coastlines of Pennsylvania and Maryland; as well as shore batteries (BL-4s) located on Wexford Harbor which fired upon enemy vessels operating within range of Delaware National Seashore. Today’s Coast Guard Station is one of many assets that make up Point Pleasant Beach Inc., which provides recreation programming for Marines stationed at bases throughout southwestern Virginia and southeastern Maryland. The Station also provides emergency medical services to local residents when needed and participates in firefighting efforts throughout northeastern Ohio including four counties near Toledo - Cuyahoga County; Lucas County; Warren County; Ashtabula County - making it one point source for public safety statewide

Bay, Ohio is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio, located on the bay of Toledo and across the river from Detroit. The population was 21,604 at the 2010 census. Bay was founded in 1810 by Nicholas Bayou and his family as a port for shipping goods to and from Detroit. The village of Bayville also grew up around this time. In 1813, General Dearborn captured Bay when he invaded Michigan and made it part of the United States. In 1815, Dearborn renamed the town after him in honor of our noble general who had fought so nobly for us during our Revolutionary War against Great Britain. In 1865, General George Armstrong Custer's command stopped at Bay on their way back from fighting with General Joe Hooker's army at Perrysburg Battlefield near Pittsburgh. Many soldiers were killed or wounded while crossing that bridge over the bayou which still stands today - just east of present day Troy Hill Road (M-57). This event is commemorated by a small park on Broadway just east of M-57 called Custer Park. Bay experienced rapid growth following World War II due to its proximity to Detroit and its status as an important naval base during that time period. The population reached 26,000 by 1950 but slipped below 17,000 by 1970 due to leavingDetroit for other economic opportunities outside metro Detroit area like Cleveland and Toledo
Bay was founded by George Robertson in 1795. The village developed as a farming community and became an important stop on the Underground Railroad before being destroyed by fire in 1892.
