Barberton is a small town in central Ohio, located on the Scioto River. The population was 7,536 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Lorain County. The town was founded by General John Barber and his soldiers in 1792 during the American Revolutionary War. The settlement grew rapidly due to its location on a navigation route between Cincinnati and Boston. In 1812, it became part of the United States when President James K. Polk signed an act creating Ohio Territory. In 1826, General Samuel J. Clemens moved from Dayton to Barberton and started a grocery store there which became one of the largest in Ohio. As prosperity increased in Cleveland, many people came to Barberton to work in manufacturing or service industries such as stone quarries and foundries; this attracted new residents who purchased land around the town site. On December 15, 1907, a tornado struck Barberton killing five people and injuring twenty-six others; it was one of the deadliest tornadoes ever recorded in Ohio. The community experienced significant growth following World War II with Dubuque becoming its biggest city after it opened up adjacent to Barberton on May 25, 1948; however, economic decline began to hit Barberton shortly thereafter as jobs disappeared in industry and transportation declined while suburban development grew nearer byroads into town center services and retail businesses vacated traditional downtown businesses for new malls containing more upscale stores catering to an increasingly affluent suburban audience instead of workers who had been drawn near by jobs that were no longer available due primarily to technological advances that made production costs less costly than ever before – like producing widgets with computers rather than hand labor).
