Marines deploy gift to family in Afghanistan Marines from the 7th Marine Expeditionary Unit deployed a gift to the families of service members who have been fighting in Afghanistan since 2001. The unit's chaplain, Sgt. 1st Class John A. Hickey, delivered the gifts on Saturday, Dec. 12 at a military installation in Bagram airfield, Afghanistan. Each soldier and sailor bring their loved ones a Christmas present with an inscription that says "Thank you for your service." The donations come as part of what is being called "The Christmas Tree Project," which will provide more than 2,000 items to local relief organizations across Kabul and Kandahar provinces over the next six months.

Avon, Ohio is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Shiawassee County. It is located on the Scioto River and was founded in 1814 by General John Custer as a small trading post named Fort Reuben. In 1900, Avon became part of the Cleveland metropolitan area and has since experienced significant growth. The population was 21,898 at the 2010 census, ranking it fifth in Ohio after Toledo, Akron, Canton and Youngstown.[1] The town is known for its avocados, apple orchards, cheese factory (now defunct), cinema complex (Avon Mills), fine dining restaurants including Red Lobster and Olive Garden,[2][3] golf courses such as The Ridges[4] and Avon Lake,[5] water parks like Six Flags Great America and Cedar Point amusement park[6][7] as well as its total area of 24 square miles (60 km2). The community was founded on October 12th 1814 by General John Custer with his three companies of cavalry under his command during the War of 1812 against Native Americans. As a result of this battle near present day Miamisburg Heights east of Avon on September 25th 1814 Custer's force destroyed an encampment numbering some 1,500 warriors. This event helped to spur new settlement westward from Miamisburg towards what is now Shiawassee County.[8][9][10] On July 10th 1830 David Fenton established Griggs & Fenton Auctioneers at what is now corner Market Square in downtown Avon after winning a $30 000 auction held by Ebenezer Scrooge at runtime on November 17th 1830. At that time there were only five southeastern United States locations offering real estate services through auctions; these included Cincinnati [11], Mobile [12], Savannah [13], Richmond [14], Philadelphia [15], Jacksonville Florida had also opened up their market to include auctioneering but only offered land transactions within their city limits not outside their boundaries however within two years all sixteen eastern locations had closed down due to economic conditions including Act No 9 of 1800 which banned any private interests buying property outside city limits except for public schools etc…..the only exceptions being those twoFenton properties which were purchased by speculators who intended to develop them into major railroads….this caused much outcry among citizens who saw this as another example of developers raiding rural areas).[16] US Congressman James Kapp (R-OH) led an effort to have this law changed so that any business interested in purchasing property outside city Limits could do so without fear of retribution from government officials……..This resulted in act no 9 being repealed effective January 2nd 1800 effective “last chance” shopping opportunity for citizens before taxes were raised……..thus beginning commercial development……………the first store built in town was built by Jno Gardner – he built the first house on Main Street….a blacksmith shop followed soon thereafter……………avocados continued to be grown here until about 1840 when they started moving away due to sun exposure problems……….the last avocado tree died around 1905

The Marines were first fielded in 1775 as part of the Continental Army and served throughout the war, including in both the Battle of Bunker Hill and Yorktown. After the war, marines were stationed in Rhode Island andNew England where they played an important role in suppressing piracy and protecting shipping. In 1846, marines were sent to Mexico to suppress a insurrection against Mexican troops. From then until 1912, marine detachments served in Cuba, Nicaragua, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic and Venezuela. In 1916, marines mobilized for World War I and participated in various campaigns including Salerno and Caporetto. In 1940, marines fought at Guadalcanal during World War II before deployment to Tarawa during the Marianas campaign. During World War II there was a significant increase in marine fatalities as a result of combat operations such as Bataan Bay or Saipan. As veterans returned home following the war many wanted to contribute their time and expertise to help rebuild postwar America. Accordingly, Congress passed legislation authorizing Operation Neptune’s Spear which called for the mobilization of 1 million Marines for service on two fronts-the Pacific Theater and Europe-in order to bolster American morale following Japan’s surrender at Hiroshima on August 6th 1945.[1] A total of 1069 Marines died during WWII[2], with more than half (553) killed while serving aboard ships or aircraft carriers engaged in battle[3]. The majority (668 out of 921) of Marine fatalities occurred by swimming into enemy territory rather than engaging directly with enemy combatants; it is estimated that only 2 percent of all engagements resulted in any serious physical injury or death involving Marines[4]. Of particular note are Marine fatalities from grenade detonations caused by Japanese soldiers,[5] who often detonated grenades specifically designed to injure Marines[6]. Nevertheless, despite these high numbers it should be noted that not every Marine fatality was due to combat operations; around one third (269 out of 887) perished from causes such as accidents or exposure while on duty[7]. Additionally some marines lost their lives from natural causes such as illness or suicide; this number does not include those who did not die from combat but succumbed To accidents or other causes after returning home [8]. It can be said that even thoughWWII saw a large number marine fatalities there was also an enormous amountof heroism shown by those who wore blue uniforms; many went above and beyond what is expected when fighting against enemies foreign soil.[9]
