Avon, Ohio is a small town in the Midwestern United States. The population was 5,825 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Cleveland-Akron-Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. Avon is located on the banks of the Cuyahoga River, about 25 miles (40 km) southeast of Cleveland and 50 miles (80 km) northeast of Akron. Avon was founded in 1818 by Nicholas Gage and his family as an agricultural village on what is now the border of Medina and Summit Counties. In 1824, Gage donated land to form what became Avon Township. He also donated a millstream that ran through his township for irrigation purposes. The first store in Avon was built by John Washington in 1830. By 1860,Avon had a post office, two churches (oneMethodist and one Presbyterian), five schools (grades 1-9), two stores and one blacksmith shop. In 1872, avon trustees adopted a new constitution which provided for equal rights for all citizens regardless of race or sex; this led to increased racial tensions throughout much of America during this time period. In 1898, avon voters passed a resolution urging president William McKinley not to award Congressional Medal Of Honor citations to Confederate General Robert E Lee because he had served in an American army before the war started; this caused outrage among many avon residents who considered themselves patriots who did not support slavery then or now.
