Avon is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the seat of Avon Township. The population was 27,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton–Daytona Beach–Muncie metropolitan area, with a total population of more than 500,000 people. The area that would become Avon was settled by Native Americans in 1680 as part of the Miami Purchase from France. In 1801, United States troops burned down much of what is nowAvon while they were occupying Canada during the War for Independence. The name "Avon" was first applied to this area on May 9, 1802 when General James Wilkinson named it after John Avon, an Englishman who had served as an aide to American general Anthony Wayne during the war. In 1824, George Washington purchased land east of present-day Avon and laid out a township called East Liberty Township which included all that would become Avon except for two small parcels of land south of Dayton which were given to Judge David Stroud and Captain Oliver Hazard Perry respectively as grantations for their services in suppressing Indian uprisings on behalf of US President Andrew Jackson during his presidency. In 1827, Congress passed legislation annexing Springfield Township (then known as West Liberty) into Avon Township so that it could be close to Cincinnati so that goods could be transported between those cities without being carried overland through Indian Territory; this caused some resentment among members of the avontown community because they felt that Cincinnati should have been included in town boundaries instead. A post office called "Avondale" was established in 1830; however it became inactive by 1836 and its function was transferred to "New Athens". A new post office called "Avonsville" was established on February 14, 1840; however it also became inactive by 1841 due to lack of residents moving there from other towns in adjacent counties). In 1850, West Liberty Township merged with East Liberty Township to form NewLibertyTownship . On July 1st 1861 all townships within Dayton County were consolidated under one government when Ohio took full control from Michigan due to her ongoing Civil War efforts; this created suburban areas throughout central Ohio not served by traditional downtowns such as Columbus or Cleveland proper – including parts near Cincinnati – which resulted in many businesses closures and a decline in avontown's economic importance over time. On October 15th 1915 a fire destroyed most if not all buildings within what is now known as OldWestLibertyStreet ; although no injuries occurred any damage done beyond loss or destruction value amounted to $1,500 worth Of property . This event marked an important turning point for avontown as virtually everything lost since then has had significant monetary value reflecting how quickly things can go downhill when something like this happens .
