Avon is a city in Butler County, Ohio, United States. The population was 46,564 at the 2010 census. The area now comprising Avon was laid out in 1815 by pioneers of the Erie Canal. Avon is one of three cities in Butler County and it is the county seat. Other two towns are Defiance and Sandusky. The first permanent settler in what would become Avon was John Richardson who built a cabin on an overlook overlooking the Ohio River in 1815. A few years later he married Laura Smith and they began to clear land for their farmstead which included four homes, sixty-six acres (240 hectares) of cultivation and twenty-eight slaves. By 1820 they had added another home and five more slaves to their holdings, making them one of the largest slaveholders in Northwest Ohio at that time. Avon's early years were difficult due to lack of transportation options available for its residents as well as competition from other settlements around the region. However, over time avonians managed to make themselves comfortable by developing a strong economy based on agriculture and manufacturing with a focus on quality products that could be sold throughout Northeast Ohio. Avon experienced some prosperity during World War II when it became home to US military supply plants engaged in manufacturing munitions such as tanks, planes and artillery pieces for Allied forces fighting Nazi Germany; however this prosperity ultimately ended with the war when production stopped due to wartime shortages of materials abroad. Despite this setback, Avon has continued to grow economically since then through various annexation processes which have brought new businesses, jobs and housing developments within city limits while preserving much of its nuclei heritage including its downtown core where many former businesses still remain today including All American Furniture Company (now JCPenney), First National Bank (now Wells Fargo) and several national churches such as Sts Peter & Paul Catholic Church (now Trinity United Methodist Church).

In 1868, Avon became one of the initial towns in the newly formed United States of America. The town experienced significant growth during World War II, becoming an important military base due to its location on Lake Erie. The following decade saw a decline in population due to industrialization and suburban development within the town limits.
