The history of the United States Army begins with the Revolutionary War. The Articles of Confederation, which created the United States of America, did not include a military. On July 4, 1776, General George Washington was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the newly formed Continental Army and ordered to march on Quebec City in order to demand its independence from Great Britain. After besieging Quebec for two months, Washington withdrew his army in October and disbanded it. On December 12, 1775, Congress passed an act authorizing the Secretary of War to assemble a regiment “of volunteers” at Avon (now Avon Heights) in Ohio for duty during the American Revolution. The first unit raised at Avon were companies C and D of Colonel John Stark’s Regiment (later redesignated 1st Battalion Cincinnati Volunteers), who served under General Benedict Arnold until his capture in May 1777. In April 1779 Captain James Wilkinson organized a company from local militiamen called “The White Boys” which joined Governor Robert Morris’ forces against British troops commanded by MajorGeneral Edward Braddock at Monongahela Pass near Pittsburgh. After weeks of hard fighting, Wilkinson’s men emerged victorious and captured over 100 British soldiers including Braddock himself; this event is generally considered as one of the most dramatic moments in American history. Avon Heights was also home to another battalion – 1st Battalion Pennsylvania Volunteers – which arrived there on December 12th1780 after being mustered out of service in Georgia that year. At this time much activity took place around town because so many people had enlisted for service in North America during those tumultuous times: many early avon residents became prominent members or founders of both the United States Congress and her later wars with Spain etcetera. A company from 2nd Battalion Connecticut Infantry arrived on February 14th 1801 but soon left due to lack of supplies and recruits; their stay however marked a turning point for Avon as it now became an important spot for military activities since it lay between Great Miami Valley eastward to Ashtabula Creek and westward to where Fort Pitt now stands

The Avon Volunteer Infantry was an American infantry regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. The regiment was organized atAVon, Ohio on July 12, 1861, and mustered into service on October 16, 1861. The regiment left for Illinois on October 28, 1861, and arrived at Chicago on November 1st. On November 7th the regiment proceeded thence to Vandalia where they were halted by Confederate forces under General Beauregard. On December 10th the Regiment moved out of Vandalia and participated in the Battle of Peoria which ended with a Confederate victory. On January 9th 1862 the unit moved northward to Springfield Armory where they took part in the First Battle of Springfield. They then marched to Cairo where they engaged in operations against Confederate General Braxton Bragg. The battle resulted in a Union victory and Bragg was taken prisoner while his forces were consolidated with those of General Sherman at Prairie Grove Farm near Cairo. The regiment returned south to Corinth on February 15th 1862 and participated in operations against Brigadier-General David Hunter who had commanddthe Department of Mississippi River Districts under Generals Jackson and Pope. At Corinth Village there was a skirmish resulting in one soldier killed and two wounded; this engagement is generally considered as one of the bloodiest episodes of the war. In April 1862 these troops joined other Union units fighting under Lieutenant-Governor John Gorham (New York) against Confederate General Robert Ewell’s army along Iuka Creek Supervisors bridge across Tennessee River near Chattanooga; this action resulted in several tactical victories for United States over Confederate armies until spring 1865 when all Southern armies surrendered unconditionally at Appomattox Court House Cemetery near Petersburg Virginia

Avon, Ohio is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Stark County. As of the 2010 census, its population was 9,052. It is part of the Cleveland-Akron-Canton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that became Avon was first settled by Native Americans in the late 17th century as part of the East Side Settlement near present day Akron. In 1801, John Davenport founded what would become Avon after purchasing land from the Miami Nation for $4,000. At that time it was one of four townships formed within Stark County from parts of Summit and Athens districts. On July 16, 1802, Avon's first post office opened with three settler members: Isaac Goodspeed (a Revolutionary War veteran), Fenton Burritt (the son of a wealthy merchant) and Samuel Thornton (the brother-in-law and predecessor to future mayor George Wertz).
