In addition to its roasting expertise, The General Coffee Company was also one of the first companies to sell espresso drinks based on whole bean espresso shots (known today as cafe latte). Thanks largely to advertising by Burt Schwartz (founder of Starbucks), The General Coffee Company became known as one of the most important purveyors of fine Italianate coffee around during this time period. As demand for specialty coffee increased throughout America during the late 1800s and early 1900s, so did interest in producing small batches of this prized commodity within specific geographic areas like Avon LakeOH. As more people learned about how great quality cup-of-Joe's could be created using only fresh roasted beans sourced from within a few miles radius, they became increasingly interested in buying these products directly from local growers instead of going through an intermediary such as The General Coffee Company or Starbucks! The first settler in Avon Lake was George Atherton in 1814. He built a cabin on the current site of the town. The area that now includes Avon Lake was first surveyed by Zachariah Beechum in 1826 and given to John Cranch as part of his purchase of land for the new village of Akron. In 1830, David Worthman moved to Avon Lake from Greenfield and helped start the town's post office. Avon Lake had its beginning as a milltown because of its importance as a center for producing flour for local markets. By 1851, it had become one of the largest towns in Stark County and had also gained importance as an agricultural center due to its large population of cornhuskers and soybeans.
