The name "Avon" is from an Irish word meaning "valley." Avon Lake has been home to many important events in local history including the Battle of Gettysburg which took place there on July 4th 1863, when more than 12,000 Confederate soldiers were defeated by Union troops under General George Meade; the signing of the Treaty of Paris that ended World War II; andPresidential inaugurations (Ulysses S. Grant in 1865 and Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1933). In 1971, Avon Lake became one of six municipalities within Dayton's newly formed Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) which included all of Clark County and much of central Ohio. In 2000, Avon Lake voted to become a full city with its own Mayor/Mayor Pro Tem position and City Council members who areelected at-large instead of based on ward boundaries like most other municipalities within Dayton's MSA.

Avon Lake is a small town in Holmes County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,435 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Akron–Canton–Muncie metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what would become Avon Lake was Levi Coffin in 1792. In 1817, Amos Kendall purchased land from Abram KNOTT for $2,000 and began to build a cabin on the bank of the Muddy River. The first post office was established at Avon Lake in 1825. By 1840,Avon Lake had a total population of 153 people and consisted of just 11 dwellings. In 1847, John CRAWFORD laid out a township comprising all that now makes up Avon Lake Township including portions of Canfield and Perrysburg townships east of the river and parts west of it which he called "New Townships". Crawford's new township included most of present-day Holmes County as well as parts of Summit and Sandusky counties. A post office was established at New Townships on July 10, 1847; it was abolished two years later because postal services were transferred to Akron (then part of Youngstown) undercutting its importance. In 1850, James GASSETT opened a ferry crossing over the Muddy River between Avon Lake Landing on the north side and New Townships Landing on the south side which became an important transportation link between Avon Lake Township and Canfield when roads were not built to connect those areas until after 1830s when canals were constructed nearby In 1861 JOSEPH HUGHES platted what is today known as East Side Road off US 421 near where Granger Road meets I-75 about two miles southwest ofpresent-day AvonLake That same year JAMES WASHINGTON platted what is today known as West Side Road off US 421 about one mile southwestofpresent-dayAvonLake also near where Granger Road meets I-75 About two milessouthwestof present dayAvonLake also near where Granger Road meets I-75 One other road developed during this time: Howard Rd./State Route 522 ran along State Routes 422 & 522 just northbound before turning east onto US 421 towards Dayton This road has since been renamed Butler Rd./State Route 422 . On November 3rd 1870 WILLIAM BECKER organized a grist mill here which became one of America’s leading corn mills producing flour for local markets until 1902 When Cleveland bought out America’s largest corn milling company Beckers Mill closed its doors . avondalake@aol
