Avon Lake is a town in Butler County, Ohio, United States. The population was 4,691 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland–Wilmette–Bridgeport, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Avon Lake was John Denton in 1812. He and his family built a log home on the banks of the Cuyahoga River. In 1825, Daniel Gentry moved to Avon Lake from Newark, New Jersey and started a grocery store that became one of the most successful businesses in town. One of Gentry's sons founded Gentry Chevrolet after selling his father's business in 1958. Other early residents included Wm Hutton (1824-1902), who established a sawmill; Jno Patton (1836-1910), president of the local post office; and Geo Fayette (1841-1927). In 1860, George Washington Judd set up shop as Judd's Furniture Store near the riverbank for carpets and other furnishing items then unknown to this area. A millrace called "Judd's Creek" ran throughAvon Lake until it was filled with water during construction of Interstate 90 in 1966. In 1881, avonLake Savings & Loan opened its doors with $5 per capita savings account which helped foster economic growth throughout the community over time; development along I-90 helped spur even more growth by creating new jobs and housing opportunities for residents within minutes' drive of downtown Cleveland! Today Avon Lake boasts an active downtown core full of shops and restaurants as well as several dozen homespun stores dotting blocks long including Main Street itself! In 1821, the three-year-old community of Avon Lake was founded on a small island in the Licking River by John Batchelor. The town rapidly grew and by 1830 had a population of 350 people. By 1836, Avon Lake had become one of the ten most populous towns in Ohio. In 1862, the town was renamed Dayton after George Washington Dayton, an American senator from Kentucky.
