Avon Lake is a town in Findlay County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,539 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lima–Meringue–Canal City Combined Statistical Area. The name "Avon" comes from the Iroquois word āwōn (аυων), meaning "big water." The name was given to the stream that flows through town and makes up most of its surface area. Avon was incorporated as a town on December 4, 1892. The first settler in present-day Avon Lake was Jonas Snively, who arrived in 1796 and built a cabin on the east bank of the mainstem of what is now known as Snake Creek. He named his new settlement after Aubrey or Augustine (the biblical figure), brother of Captain John Smith who explored America during the early part of the 19th century. At first there were only two dwellings inAvon—one by Snively himself and one by another settler, Isaac Phelps Dodge. In 1899, when it became apparent that an Interstate highway would be built through Findlay County and nearby Scioto Township, three more dwellings were erected: one by Wm Hallett on behalf of himself and two others for himby fellow townsman Aiken Phelps Dodge; one by Samuel Ives for Drury Lane Dairy Company; one by Harry Niles for Niles' Store & Restaurant.—All structures still stand today within their original boundaries.: In 1906 avonsite started constructionof a high school which would later become Doane University., The first post office opened inAvon on May 2, 1909.; It closed September 30th 1914 due to lack of mail.; Today Avon has 3 churches:, 2 banks:, 1 fire station:, 1 golf club:, & 1 library

Avon Lake is an extinct natural community located in the unincorporated community of Bellefontaine, Ohio, in Holmes County. It was abandoned by settlers in the early 19th century because of its difficult access and lack of water. The area now occupied by Avon Lake was first settled by German-speaking farmers in the 1840s. By 1850, only a few small farms remained near the lakeshore. In 1872, a group of local charter schools opened in Bellefontaine; this led to increased settlement around the lakeshore, which attracted many people from nearby cities and towns. By 1890, most of what is now Bellefontaine had been developed as a resort town with large homes and acreage for agriculture. However, during World War I, Avon Lake served as a training ground for American troops on maneuvers near Cleveland. As a result of its role in war-time activities, it acquired some notoriety among residents and visitors alike. Today,Avon Lake remains an undeveloped recreational area that offers opportunities for fishing, boating, swimming and hiking.
