Avon Lake was an early post-Civil War town in the Ohio Valley. It was located on the east bank of the Avon River, about fifteen miles (24 km) north of Dayton. The town was founded in 1855 by a group of Tory Republicans led by John C. Avon and William L. Pope. At its peak,Avon Lake had a population of 1,500 people and a schoolhouse and store. In 1875, the town developed into a large milltown with several mills and twenty-five houses. By 1907, only two of the original buildings remained in Avon Lake: the schoolhouse and the store. However, due to its importance as a commercial center during this time period,Avon Lake continued to thrive until it went out of business in 1945.

The area that now includes Avon Lake was first settled by Native Americans in the late 17th century as part of Miami County. A post office called Whitehall was established in 1814, and was renamedAvon after Avon Township, which had been organized two years earlier. In 1837, a group of German miners discovered coal there and began to mine it commercially; this led to increased development around the lake until World War II when oil production resumed andAvon became an important center for manufacturing goods related to that industry. During the 1960s and 1970s, heavy metal manufacturer Arvee moved its operations from Canton to Avon Lake; however, Arvee left town during the economic recession of 2001 and not re-enter again until 2009 when it announced plans to build a new factory on what is now known as North Lakeshore Drive near its current site in east Canton village (near where Avon Township once stood). The company has since retired from those operations but continues to lease land for factories on South Lakeshore Drive near Greenfield Village; those operations are no longer active but continue to be used for storage purposes only because they fall within zoning boundaries for an industrial park managed by Mahoning Valley Airport Authority which also includes neighboring villages Whitehall and homebuilt community Beechwood Estates development - all located within walking distance or biking distance of each other with easy access into both villages via public transportation systems or nearby roads). According to the 2010 census, there were 4,859 people living in Avondale Village: 3992 households (68 %), 1088 families (26 %), 5789 individuals (175 %)
