The first coffee shop in Aurora, Ohio was founded by Mrs. John Smeaton in 1912. The business continued to be run by Mrs. Smeaton and her husband until the early 1970s. In that time, the store became one of the most popular small businesses in the city.
Aurora, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the seat of Lucas County. The population was 31,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland metropolitan area, which has a total population of 567,711. The city is located on the eastern edge of Cleveland-Akron Metropolitan Statistical Area and forms one side of Lake Erie with its neighbor CLEVELAND-MUNCIE, Indiana. Aurora also borders Canada to the south and west while Mentor and other suburbs form another border to the east. The first settler in what is now Aurora was Nicholas Grieve who arrived in 1795 from Portsmouth, England with his family.[1] Grieve built a log cabin on current day State Road 1 near what is now First Congregational Church[2]. In 1824 he erected a frame building for himself and his wife Lucy Ann (Grieve) at present day Main Street and Elmwood Drive[3]. A post office was established here in 1825[4], but it changed hands several times before being closed in 1842[5][6]. In 1847 Eliza Hargrave moved into her own home on Elmwood Drive,[7] becoming Aurora's first Female Mayor when she served as 3rd from behind after John Fenton and George Ripley resigned their positions due to lack of candidates.[8][9] In 1863 James Ewing platted land that would become Aurora Township adjoining Warren Township[10]; however Warren Township actually received its charter two years later on November 11th 1865 from secretary Simon Cameron as an "independent township" within Perry Township; thus Warren became history’s second township Part I within Euclid Township proper only 2 years later! In 1889 revisions were made to municipal boundaries making Aurora annexation possible so that it would be included within Euclid Tract 10 & 20 although this didn’t happen until 1913 when it finally annexed by Euclid City! On October 14th 1907 residents voted 6-1 to create a new city government for “Aurora” over objections from incumbent mayor Waite Glasscock who claimed city officials could not handle more than one municipality at a time[11]: this vote placed then-mayor Glasscock out of contention for re-election after 12 years as mayoralty! On January 8th 1915 Commissioners John Hickey and Harry Deverick created “The City Committee” charged with developing urban services including fire protection, streetlights etc., creating what would eventually become known as The Department Of Planning & Development – all prior thereto having been controlled by then elected Mayor Waite Glasscock! Additionally appointed commissioners were: Drury Wray (police), Mrs Laughlin (fire department), JB Neumann (attracker/water boy) & PEPPER JOHNSTON (streetlight contractor)! Finally electric lights were turned on December 15th 1915!! All citizens were required by law to either have electric light or go without!! Which must have been quite an adjustment back then given how dark it still can get during certain hours today 😉 !! With such great accomplishments comes some controversy too though like when zoning changes were made back in 1978 which eliminated many businesses along North Market Street; plus why no mention whatsoever was made about those changes when written records are extant today?! One thing we know for sure though; no matter how things change here at “The City Committee” we keep getting closer & closer to our goal of becoming an official City Government…hopefully soon!!

Aurora was founded in 1824 by General David Dixon as a military post on the Scioto River, about 12 miles (19 km) east of what is now Cleveland. The area that became Aurora was part of the Northwest Territory under the jurisdiction of France until it was ceded to Great Britain in 1783. In 1824, General David Dixon renamed the post "Aurora" after his home town in Scotland and took possession of land north and west of Cleveland on which he built barracks for troops and erected a stockade to protect hispost from attack by Native Americans. The first store opened in 1828 at what is now Grandview Avenue and State Route 58. By 1830, Aurora had become a major transportation center with stagecoaches connecting Cleveland with Cincinnati and other points along the Great Lakes region. A new bridge across the Scioto River was completed in 1835 linking Aurora with downtown Cleveland and new homes were built around this time including Oneida Lakehouse on today's Belmont Drive within walking distance of both businesses and services located downtown such as libraries, churches (Anglican), theaters (Dodger Stadium being one), banks, grocery stores, etc... In 1840 CLARENCE MCDANIEL DOWNEY set up business as an druggist here at 5500 Euclid Avenue and soon years later moved out into larger premises near 10th St NW & Walnut Street of course our amazing Mr Downey would move again just 3yrs later to finally establish himself (& wife) back home sweet Home @ Auroras Armory complex !! Incidentally during this time frame too Clarens largest purchase yet! 6 lots valued at $2251/acre…….. Now known as Downeys Landing….. thus giving us our name……………. but also sticking USED equipment still parked outside property today!! This however all changes one day when Hurricane Andrew hits!!!OK so not everyone got hurt or displaced but momma did get her dream house 🙂 From then on things REALLY take off for us young people from OHIO 😉 And guess where that leads us folks….. back to school !! You betcha !!
