Aurora, Ohio is a small town in the northwestern corner of the United States. It is located on the Unincorporatedshared County line with Stark County and has a population of about 6,000. The name “Aurora” was given to the community by George Washington in 1795 as part of his land grant to Captain John Aurora. Aurora was incorporated as a village in 1825 and became an unincorporated community in 1907. TheVillage Trustee was elected every two years until 1951 when it became an appointed body. In 1954, it lost its status as an unincorporated community and reverted back to being a village. In 2009, it received city status from Mayor Todd Sievers after the approval of the City Council. The first settlers to arrive in what is now Aurora were farmers who came overland from Pennsylvania in 1792. By 1800, there were some 25 families living hereabouts including five or six farmers, three ministers (one Presbyterian and four Methodist), one doctor ( Drury), one blacksmith ( Newell) and two carpenters (Hanson). There were also several slaves who worked on farms near present day Perrysburg while others lived off Indian hunting grounds across the Genesee River north of town center. By 1824 there were only three families remaining in what is now Aurora: those mentioned above plus Mrs. Greenlaw’s family consisting of her husband David Greenlaw Sr., their son David Greenlaw Jr., Mrs. Haggerty’s son Samuel Haggerty, daughter Lydia Haggerty and mother-in-law Martha Ann Haggerty; all but Mrs. Haggerty being born before 1800 and most likely free women or Aboriginal people brought over as captives during or after the American Revolutionary War etc.). In 1827 we had our first schoolhouse built which served us for many years until replaced by a new one built about 1900 west of town center on what is now Wabash Road; that building still stands today having been restored multiple times including most recently in 2006 restoration funded by local citizens through their Neighborhood Watch program – see website link below). From this time forward until 1861 there wasn’t any public schooling available for residents here so children either went to school east of towncenter where teachers taught reading/math/english underpaid wages or else they walked 3 miles each way to Our Lady Of Mount Carmel School which stood on Brush Hill just south of town center; that building was destroyed by fire November 12th 1861 but later rebuilt using parts salvaged from other buildings burned down at That School Settlement near present day Perrysburg though not completed until 1912!
