The Aurora Volunteer Infantry was an American infantry regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. It was organized at Aurora, Ohio on December 12, 1861, and mustered in on February 15, 1862. The regiment fought in the Battle of Antietam on July 16, 1862, and at the Battle of Fredericksburg on September 13, 1862. In November 1862 it was transferred to the 3rd Brigade Combat Team of the XI Corps under General Ulysses S. Grant. The brigade fought in the Chattanooga Campaign and in Vicksburg Operation Mississippi Valley. It surrendered with other Confederate units east of Mobile Bay on April 9 1865.
Aurora, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Holmes County. The population was 21,853 at the 2010 census. Aurora is part of the Cleveland-Akron-Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area as well as being included within Greater Cleveland's Combined Statistical Area. It is located on the southern border of Lake Erie, just east of its largest city, Cleveland and north of Akron proper. The area that would become Aurora was first settled by Europeans in the late 17th century, when French traders established a trading post near present-day Uniontown and founded what would become Aurora Township on November 3, 1689. In 1801, US Surveyor General James Kieft set out to plat out what would become Holmes County Precinct 1 and named it after Colonel John Holmes (1724–1812), one of his surveyors. The first town charter was granted on April 12, 1802 to John Prentice and other early residents who had come from Ridgefield Township in New York State under pressure from settlers in that region about to be relocated because their land had been bought by Major George Rogers Clark during the War for Independence. On October 25, 1806 – two years before Ohio became a state – voters elected President James Kempton to serve as township trustee for three years with no salary or compensation; he became one of the first officials in America appointed by popular vote rather than through appointment from above by an aristocracy or minister

Aurora, Ohio is the smallest city in the United States by population and has only been a municipality for a total of sixteen years. The city was founded in 1836 as part of the Toledo area and became an official municipality in 1868. Aurora's history can be traced back to July 4, 1800 when General Lewis Cassaore set up camp on what is now the corner of Washington Street and Elm Street in Aurora. On that date, he called out all the militiamen who were stationed along the Great Lakes region for service in defense of America against British Invasion. This event helped lay the foundation for Aurora's eventual growth as a small town with close-knit community values. The early settlers to Aurora were mainly farmers and their families who had started arriving during the 1830s. By 1836, there were already over 100 people living in Aurora. The first public building constructed within the town limits was a log cabin which served as both a courthouse and post office until it was replaced by a more permanent structure around 1840. One of the earliest civic organizations that sprang up within the town was "The First Presbyterian Church", which met on October 3rd, 1837 to establish rules for governance within their denomination. During this time period, there were also several other important developments taking place within Aurora: In 1840, John Latta opened his successful grocery store located at 300 Saginaw Street; In 1842, James Atherton built his home on what is now Douglas Road; In 1845–46, David Hogg opened his hardware store at 601 Elm Street; And finally, in 1848–49 Timothy Bacon established himself as a physician at 522 Washington Street after practicing medicine in nearby Perrysburg for some time. These various milestones reflect life within one of Ohio's smaller towns during this pivotal period – prior to industrialization and increasedurban development across north central Ohio beginning in earnest during these decades! In 1888-89 voters passed an ordinance authorizing incorporation as a village due to lack of support from either side of the political spectrum following disestablishment of Warren County under Alexander Hamilton’s newly created government form known as “direct democracy” system (see Dayton municipal charter article). Incorporation took place on November 2nd 1889 with fifty five citizens voting yes while thirty five citizens voted no (in reverse order alphabetically). Mayor George Witherspoon appointed three trustees who would serve staggered six-month terms with no position being held twice consecutively! As per incorporation statute: “No person shall hold any office or vote upon any question whatever without first paying $5 per annum into said corporation” Thereafter elections would be held every two years thereafter through secret ballot using guildhall election methodologies adapted from those used by our present day Cook County Board members! The first term expired December 31st 1890 so president Hubbard revoked incorporation because Village status did not expire until January 1st 1901!!! Now we have our current City Government Director/Mayor… hmmm….. maybe it wasn’t such such a bad idea after all 🙂 !?!?
Aurora, Ohio is located in the southern portion of the United States. This small city was founded on October 15, 1827 by Ohio Governor George Washington Smith and the town's first mayor, Solomon Weeks. The population of Aurora grew rapidly during its early years and by 1830 it had reached 1,500 residents. On December 8, 1835, Aurora became a city charter with a population of 10,000 people. During the mid-19th century Aurora experienced rapid growth due to its position as an important transportation hub for goods entering and leaving Indiana and Ohio. In 1861 the city was destroyed by a fire that burned for days. In 1902 Aurora became one of twenty-one towns in Cleveland County that formed the new Municipal District of Cleveland. The Municipal District served as an economic center for much of northwestern Ohio until it folded in 1964 when all municipal districts were dissolved within their respective counties. Today there is only scattered evidence remaining from what once flourished in this part of Greater Cleveland
