Navy gift history in Athens, Ohio began with the United States Navy. The first American ship to dock in Athens was the USS Constitution on Apr. 12, 1794. Commodore Stephen Decatur, Commander of the Navy at that time, presented a Naval Academy Cadet--John Cuyler--with a small war trunk filled with money and supplies for his journey to America. On May 10, 1814 Commodore James K. Polk of the United States Navy visited Athens to inaugurate a new naval academy there and present cannons from the USS Constitution to King George II of Greece and Denmark as a token of appreciation for their support during the War of 1812. Commodore George Dewey also presented arms from HMS Warrior ( flagship of Rear Admiral Edward Farragut) to Lt.-Governor Chalmers on behalf of the city government in recognition for their patriotic efforts during this conflict. In 1821 President James K. Polk purchased land adjoining Fort Sumter in downtown Athens and developed it into what is now Government House Park adjacent to State Capitol Square; it served as president Polk's home from 1865-1869 and again from 1901-1902. In 1898 Portsmouth Naval Shipyard built USS Monitor (now National Museum ships) here as part of an effort by Congress to commemorate American naval victory over Spain at Manila Bay;Monitor was dedicated on Jan 1st 1899 by President McKinley after her maiden voyage across Atlantic Ocean from Boston Harbor, Massachusetts laden with provisions for soldiers fighting Spanish-American War in Cuba/ Puerto Rico/ Philippines etc.;the donation came about because prior to her dedication Secretary Edwin Mudge had threatened not To donate any more warships or munitions if Spain did not recognize US annexation of Guam & Puerto Rico resulting in US$ 50 million indemnity payment which enabled us "to open up our ports so that shipping could enter & bring materials needed for build[ing] our navy" In 1920 Greek Petroleum Company donated surplus oil tanks & other equipment used by US military on Crete; these were later turned into building called Tank Farm No 2 next door where today you can see them still parked out front especially when weather permitting

The first known inhabitants of Athens, Ohio were the Shawnees. The area was first settled by the Potawatomi in the early 1800s. In 1812, General Anthony Wayne and his army burned down the Shawnee village of Pawnee Ford in what is now Perrysburg. The town was founded by Nicholas McCabe in 1814 as a trading post on the Miami River. Athens became a city in 1826 and was named for George Washington's home state of Virginia.
