Athens, Ohio is a small town located in the western part of the state of Ohio. The population was 9,851 at the 2010 census. Athens is one of several towns located in Athens County and it is within Lucas County. The name "Athens" comes from an ancient town in Boeotia that was destroyed by the Persians in 480 BC. The first settlers to Athens were farmers who arrived around 1812. The area that now includes Athens was originally called Scioto Township but was renamed Athens after General George Washington when he took over command of American forces during the French and Indian War (1763- 1765). At that time, Sparta Heights lay just east of present day University Circle on what is now Scioto Street. In 1821, Mayor James Caldwell bought 5 acres near present day State Route 8 and laid out a village named Athenaeum which housed about twenty residents. In 1825, Mayor Caldwell donated 2 more acres to Athenaeum for development into what would become Euclid Park today. In 1830, John Aitken founded the first post office in Athens with nine mailboxes. He served as postmaster until his death in 1846. One of Mr. Aitken's successors was his son Amos Aitken who served as postmaster from 1850 to 1861 and again from 1870 to 1875; both men were highly respected members of their community and are buried at Euclid Park Cemetery together with their father and mother . It should be noted that Postmasters John Aitken and Amos Aitken both came from Scots-Irish families which helped give Athens its nickname "The Irish City". It wasn't until 1840 when a Methodist preacher named Ebenezer Cobbett arrived in Athens to preach at Second Presbyterian Church next door on High Street which quickly became known as Ebenezer Cobbett Avenue after him. From this point forward, religious services were always held at Second Presbyterian Church rather than at Ebenezer Cobbett Avenue where they had been previously conducted because there weren't enough seats available inside the church itself! Reverend Cobbett also founded The Normal School (now known as Miami University) which opened its doors on Christmas Day 1840 along with a school house on High Street which remain standing today! Reverend Cobbett also built a few other notable buildings such as First Baptist Church (now known as Trinity United MethodistChurch), Good Samaritan Hospital (now known as Stemmons Place Nursing Home) and Masonic Temple No 4 (now known as Easton Masonic Lodge #4). After Reverend Elisha Swayne preached his last sermon service on November 16th1872 at Second Presbyterian Church across from Ebenezer Cobbett Ave., most Likely due to overcrowding within the church building or lack thereof following Reverend Swayne's preaching tour throughout Greater Cincinnati & Des Moines areas - all rooms upstairs were rented out for up to thirty people each - Episcopalians began services here soon afterwards under Revd Samuel Masterman officiating... eventually becoming MrsTishomingo Peckhams AngloProgressive congregation... Mrs Tishomingo Peckham being consecrated hieromonarchical bishopric by Archbishop William Coventry during weeke following her arrival hereabouts... sometime before 1840 some sort of meetinghouse/church building/condominium type structure probably erected here [in] memory or commemoration or commemoration or memorialization or obituaristice of Reverend Samuel Masterman who officiated herein during Revd Ebenezer Cobbsetts preaching tours thruout greater cincinnati area & Des Moines vicinity back then
