The city was constantly at war with neighboring towns and villages for space on the main road leading north to Cleveland. Despite these challenges, the city continued to grow until World War II when it experienced another rapid expansion due to its strategic location midway between Cleveland and Detroit. Aftermath of the war led to severe financial problems for Athens which eventually forced it into bankruptcy in 1970. However, since then, Athenian residents have worked hard to rebuild their city into one of distinction within their own community once again.
