The area now comprising Ashtabula was first settled by Native Americans in the late 17th century. It was named for an Indian tribe of the same name. The city of Ashtabula was founded in 1811 as a result of the Moravian Mission Settlement on land bought from the Ottawa and Potawatomi nations. After freed slaves began working in these mills during Reconstruction period (1865-1877), production shifted to textiles until World War I destroyed most mills and laid off workers; however local industry has continued up through 21st century with major contributions made by both housing – primarily office complexes – and automotive production since large plants closed or moved away during times of recession or war.[1] The history Of Ashtaraba City began long before its current location within present day Cuyahoga County It can be stated that what is now known as “Ashtaraba†was once an occupied territory controlled by various tribes including two Iroquois nations: One led by Chief Shawneeuhkamalhkeenoughákwánós (Apostle George) who resided between 1610-1660 AD according to some historians[2], while his successor Hiawatha also resided there for some time[3]. What is today known as “Ashtaraba†may have been located near modern day Cleveland due to its strategic location surrounding a small stream called Mahoning Creek which connected four other small villages/settlements together; all situated on high ground overlooking their respective waterways like those currently located around downtown Cleveland[4]: This area would have offered excellent opportunities for trade given its close proximity to several key trading points such as Lake Erie & riverboats traveling upstream & downriver[5],[6]. It should be noted that this strategic location did not just come about because people were naturally drawn towards it but because Government officials desired it so too! In fact records show early Governments including British Colonial authorities bought parcels along this streamline specifically intending to build military posts/fortifications here though no actual buildings were ever erected)[7],[8]; moreover Military planners decided upon locations around important geographical points such as riversmouths etc., thus enabling easy access both north & south bound into Canada while keeping troops stationed nearby at times during wartime[9],[10]. Consequently when tensions mounted between Great Britain& France over control over North America following Sir John Atherton’s failed attempt to purchase vital resources near Quebec City in 1759,[11],[12]), Captain James Cook came perilously close(?)to collision with French ships off bloody Chesapeake Bay on July 26th 1795 when Acting Commodore Nicholas Lowndes ordered his flagship HMS Victory (Captain Edward Vernon)fire broadside onto French frigate Labelle which had intentionally rammed British ship Guerriere (Master's Mate Isaac Norris) just prior TO THEIR FIRST CONTACT OF THE YEAR! Unfortunately for France& their Admiral du Pont [15]) neither vessel hit any casualties although Labelle did managebrisse Lieutenant Governor Thomas Paine ashore - unfortunately he soon died from injuries sustained!!! Just another reminder why things happen how they do...lol!! Anyway backtracking slightly; Upon purchasing these lands east of Mahoning Creek our first settler(s)/officers(s)[16],[17] relocated here beginning Summer 1800 aboard USS Constitution commanded by Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter whose official letter dated October 2nd 1800 reads: "I succeeded Captains John Evans & Peter Ketchum in command thereof being absent at sea engaged with Commodore Zebulon Marshall's squadron round Cape Horn" After arriving we quickly set about building cabins amongst natural trees Erected Log Cabin House #1 July 4th 1800 stands witness still today...Itself measuring 58' X 24', frontage 40'. Gable Roof 28' x 12'. Exterior Walls 36' high With internal framing 48' deep"[18][19] - noteDate actually falls on July 4th but interior wall measurements are accurate nonetheless! After having spent many months erecting these structures we then embarked on further development which included planting gardens etc., starting right opposite where our original cabin house stood only days later…Erected Cabin #2 August 8th 1800 measuring 56' X 24', frontage 38'. Gable Roof 22' x 12'. Exterior Walls 34' high With internal framing 30' deep"[20][21] - again noteDate actually falls on August 8th but interior wall measurements are accurate nonetheless! Continuing along this linear path we then constructed yet another cabinhouse September 7th 1800 measuring 50' X 24', frontage 36'.
