Ashtabula, Ohio is a small town in Ashtabula County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,852 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Akron-Canton-Muncie Combined Statistical Area. Ashtabula was founded in 1795 by John Asher and his brother David Asher. The first school in the town was established in 1800. In 1810, Ashtabula became a village and trustees were elected by the residents. The first post office opened in 1811 and mail was delivered to as far away as Delaware Junction by boat. The Battle of Fallen Timbers took place on October 26, 1813 near present day Ashtabula when Ulysses S. Grant's force attempted to cross the Scioto River into Canada after capturing Fort Erie on that date. Colonel Timothy Gildersleeve's brigade led by Brigadier General Nathan Hale fought against Grant's unit under Lieutenant Colonel Ezra Lawrence with heavy losses for both sides but ultimately lost due to lack of reinforcements coming from Cincinnati home field forces commanded by Major General William Heninger and Major General Joseph Warren who were encamped at Washington Crossing on the opposite bank of the river across from Boston where they awaited news from George Washington about what was happening on the battlefield near Detroit Heights east of Toronto, Ontario (present day Ottawa). The village had two churches; First Presbyterian which built its first building in 1830 and Second Presbyterian which built its second building between 1840 and 1850. Ashtabula was founded in 1792 by surveyors named John Ashtabula and James Morris. The town was settled on the east bank of the Scioto River, about a mile upstream from its present site. By 1800, it had a population of 25 people. The first store opened in 1802. In 1810, Ashtabula became part of the United States. In 1812, it was taken over by France as part of their Traverse missions expedition. It was re-occupied by the United States in 1814 during the War for Independence. The town grew rapidly after its incorporation into the state of Ohio in 1816. A city charter was passed in that year and Ashtabula attained its current size with a population of 400 people in 1830. The town's first school opened in 1830 and soon became one of the most popular educational institutions in central Ohio because it offered excellent instruction at an affordable price to both adults and children. A fire destroyed much of downtown Ashtabula on November 30, 1865; however, local residents rebuilt quickly using local materials and labor without any government assistance or financial support. This cooperative spirit helped keep Ashtabula thriving until 1971 when it lost its charter due to fiscal mismanagement within the city government
