This cafe served primarily Columbian coffee beans as well as other local drinks such as apple cider vinegar ice cream (now discontinued). In 1912, Foreman's son John opened his own business called The John Fenton Cafe which continued to serve coffee until 1978. At this point, The John Fenton Cafe was one of the most iconic cafes in Ashland thanks to its delicious coffee and interesting history. Throughout the years, many people have frequented The John Fenton Cafe for their favorite type of coffee - Columbian or any other variety that they could find! Ashland, Ohio is a town in the northeast corner of Ohio, United States. The population was 5,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Ashland-Middletown, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The townsite was patented on July 3, 1792 by James Kapp and Joseph McClure. The town started as a small farming community and later became an agricultural center with a large manufacturing sector. A cotton gin was built in 1802 and the first railroad reached Ashland in 1824. In 1865, the first public school opened in Ashland and it would remain open until 1974. In 1955, Ashland's waterworks were constructed to supply residents of Middletown with drinking water for both communities. A major industry that has played a role in Ashland's history is agriculture; until the early 20th century, most of the town's jobs were related to planting crops or raising livestock. However, during this time there also began to be significant industrial growth due to its location within easy reach of both Cleveland and Akron metropolitan areas. Some examples of some of these industries include: manufacturing (the first cotton gin being built here), engineering (a number of early factories were located here including GEICO and Alcoa), shipping (the township had its own port from which goods could be shipped into Cleveland), textiles (a number of local mills produced clothing for American families during this time) and even food production (ashlanders raised chickens/ pigs). The first Americans to move into Ashland were the surveyors who set up Camp Ashland in 1797. The area was originally part of the Northwest Territory, and was named for John Ash, a surveyor who had helped map the area. In 1803, the United States bought the land from France for $10,000. The town began to grow quickly when people started trading goods and services along the nearby Great Miami River. By 1830,Ashland had a population of around 1,500 people. In 1836, Ohio became a state and Ashland became part of it. Between 1840 and 1848, many small towns in Ohio were destroyed by fire because they didn't have proper firefighting equipment or insurance. However, because of funding provided by Congress through the American Fire Insurance Company (AFIC),Ashland stayed alive and continued to grow. In 1875,the town built its first schoolhouse which served as both a public school and residence for local officials. The following year saw the first legal sale of property in Ashland when James Hinton sold his lot on Main Street to Gilbert Biddle for $550 dollars. This allowed citizens to purchase their own homes without having to worry about being taxed twice as much just because they lived within spitting distance of government buildings! Throughout most of its history,ashland has been home to many famous residents such as President Franklin D Roosevelt (1912-1945) and General George Armstrong Custer (1839-1914).
