The first settlers to the area that would become Ashland were farmers who arrived from Pennsylvania in 1810. They named their new community "Ashland" after the Ashdown Forest near which they lived. By 1836, the population of Ashland had grown to over 100 people and it decided to incorporate as a town under its own governance. On July 1, 1907, following ratification of an ordinance by the township's board of trustees,Ashland became a city again under its own government with representation on both boards and more limited powers than those granted to townships. Ashland, Ohio is located in the state of Ohio and has been a part of the United States since 1792. The town was founded by Captain John Ash in 1792 after he and his family moved from Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. The first post office was established in 1802 and the town became a census-designated place (CDP) in 1968. As of the 2010 census, the population of Ashland was 47,898. The history of Ashland began with its founding as a captain's village. When Captain John Ash moved to what is now Ashland from Cumberland County, Pennsylvania in 1792, he chose to settle on land that would soon be bisected by the Miami and Erie Rivers. He named his new settlement "Ashland" after himself and his family. In 1802, when Ashville became an incorporated city, it included much of what is now western Ashtol Township including parts of modern day Ashland proper. In 1865, eastern Ashtol Township was detached from eastern Ashtol Township to form a separate municipality called Cleveland Heights which remain today as one of the five wards within Cleveland City Limits. Captain John Ash's descendants continued to live in their original village until 1901 when they sold their holdings to Andrew Carnegie for $2 million dollars. At this point most of what is now eastern Ashtol Township had been annexed into Cleveland Heights while western Ashtol Township remained part ofAshLAND itself according to its charter granted on November 8th 1902 . This long history has made ashLAND known for its many active businesses such as Ford Motor Company (1901), American Tobacco Company (1903), Wernher Hogg Papermaking Company (1945), Akron Rubbermaid Manufacturing Company (1985), Cummins Engine Corporation (1995) among others
