Coffee has been roasted in Ashland, Ohio since the early 1800s. The first coffee beans were grown in a field next to the present day town of Ashland. Coffee was ground and brewed by farmers for their own use before it was brought to market. The first coffee shop in Ashland was opened in 1881 by J.H. Beattie and his son John H. Beattie II. In 1911, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Heublein started the Heublein Coffee Shop on Market Street in downtown Ashland, which became one of the most popular locations for coffee in town. In 1924, the Heublein Coffee Shop closed its doors after over ninety years of business operation! In 1951, Don & Connie Mueller founded Don's Coffee Roasters at 4441 Main Street in downtownAshland while they were still students at Northern Kentucky University (now Murray State University). They continued operations until their retirement in 1998 when they sold their business to local entrepreneur Chip Wagner who reopened Don's as a roastery/cafeteria called "Chip's Café" inside the old German Baptist Church on Third Street near Broadway! Chip continues to roast and serve coffee here today!

Ashland, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Ashland County. As of the 2010 census, the population was 38,521. The city is located in central Stark County on the confluence of the East Branch Moore River with the Scioto River. It is bordered to the east by Jenks and to the west by Painesville Township. The first European settlement in what is now Ashland was made on September 22, 1788, when Nicholas Wilkinson and fourteen others founded a trading post on land purchased from French explorer Pierre Laclède at present-day Ottawa Street and High Street in what is now downtown Toledo. The community grew slowly until 1815, when construction of a canal linked Lake Erie with Detroit facilitated increased trade through Ashland's canal district. In 1837, John Capps developed an agricultural area that included parts of today's downtown Ashland; this led to growth for both townspeople and farmers north of Cincinnati during what became known as "the Great Migration." The growth of industry caused problems for local government; in 1907 it was suggested thatAshland be annexed into Columbus because its economic importance justified it as part of that city's "core". After years of debate over annexing smaller communities such as Painesville Township or Lucasville (both located to its east), Ashland was annexed on October 5, 1908. With its addition to Columbus came new challenges: race riots occurred throughout much of American society during those years due to changes in social structure brought about by industrialization;ashlanders were especially vulnerable to violence because they were often considered lower class whites who did not have access to education or employment opportunities outside their home communities. The annexation also brought new political challenges: many residents association wanted their city back within their own boundaries but felt they had been taken advantage by Columbus'; while some residents supported annexation because it would provide more jobs for locals, most residents saw incorporation as a way for Columbus To control them politically and economically
