Ashland is a city in Ashland County, Ohio, United States. The population was 9,812 at the 2010 census. The city is the county seat of Ashland County. It is part of the Cleveland–Akron Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit this area were French traders in 1608 and 1609. The first major American exploration of this area was by Captain John DeWitt in 1795 during his survey of the Great Lakes region for the Northwest Company. In 1803, General Anthony Wayne sent troops to burn down buildings belonging to German settlers near what is now downtown Ashland after they refused to leave because their land had not been surveyed as part of the Indian Removal Act of 1830. In 1824, an act was passed by Congress which named Ashland "the place where General Washington met with Colonel Lewis at Fort Delaware". This event helped promote settlement around present-day downtown Ashland and other areas around town including today's University Circle Shopping Center and State Reformatory No. 1 on the east side of Main Street between Grove Avenue and Elmira Place (now known as Case Western Reserve University). When statehood was granted to Ohio in 1837, most residents chose not to move from their homes behind Blue Hill Creek into what would become Columbus because they felt that their new home would be less exposed to Indian attack or violence than back at Blue Hill Creek. Instead most residents moved into towns such as Hazardville (later Greenfield), Napoleonville ( later Naperville), Mayfield Heights (later Mundelein), and Swenzerstown (later Xenia). However, some people decided to remain in central Ohio due to its rich soil and natural resources such as coalmining operations located along both sides of Blue Hill Creek; however these companies closed down within a few decades due primarily to competition from easier-to-use mines found closer to Pittsburgh and Cincinnati. In 1872 when Cleveland became the capital of Ohio, it was decided that there should be a new county seat for each metropolitan area created by statehood so that no farmer living outside Cleveland would have an advantage over one inside Cleveland while still allowing farmers living east ofCLEVELAND access to important markets without leaving their homes. Accordingly,Ashland replaceddefunct Napoleonville with its current location on Main Street just east of US 31/33 between Third Street NW and Fourth Street NW in 1872 based on suggestions made by Mayor John Baulding who desired a more centralized government center with better transportation options available within easy reach for all citizens regardless of standing testifies “The site proposed by Mayor Baulding had much promise but soon fell victim also after being opposed by many residents who saw it only as an opportunity for developers [to build] further away from them insteadsof close together like desirable . . . Although built originally next door [toNapoleonville], development pushed it out onto Third Street so that it became essentially abandoned." Following annexation by Cleveland in 1912 following a referendum vote taken via email system among all registered voters statewide excluding military personnel stationed inside CLEVELAND – Ashlanders voting power increased markedly since much property lay outside city limits – Downtown business started moving back into main street beginning around 1920’s although initial plans called for retail space only on 4th & 5th Streets alongside City Hall until 1925 when corner store sqares were developed along 2nd & 3rd Streets opposite Park Row park

Ashland was founded on November 15, 1814 by James Wilkinson and his wife Elizabeth. The town had a population of just over 100 people when it was first platted out. In 1836, Ashland became one of four towns that formed the Lima-Canton metropolitan area. As a result of this growth, businesses in Ashland grew into major players in their respective communities. By 1860, however, Ashland's economic status had begun to decline as railroad transportation increased competition from larger cities such as Cleveland and Cincinnati. With no new transportation projects planned forAshland for some time future, its economy slowly declined until it reached a low point during the Depression years. However, after World War II Ashland experienced another period of growth thanks to new construction and development which revived the town's economy once again.
