The Navy's Deployed Gift History in Amherst, Ohio begins with the USS Constitution (1801-1845) which arrived on campus in 1835. The USS Constitution was a gift from the United States to Ohio during the War of 1812. After serving as USS Constitution Museum ship in Cleveland, Ohio and then part of the US Naval Academy fleet, she decommissioned at Boston, Massachusetts in 1945 and was donated to the University by her owner, Captain James W. Phelps. She served as a research vessel at the University until 1978 when she was donated back to the Navy and recommissioned as USS Constitution Museum ship again. On October 10th of that year (1978), President Jimmy Carter presented her toAmherst College for continued use as a college dormitory/museum ship. It has been stated that this is one of only two ships ever given back to their country after being withdrawn from service by another government (the other being the Soviet Union's Kirov). In 2006-2007 she underwent restoration which restored all original equipment and repairs were made throughout her history including refitting for digital display technology. The USS Constitution served as a flagship of Commodore James K. Polk during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). On November 1, 1847, Commodore James K. Polk was relieved by Admiral David Farragut and the USS Constitution returned to Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for a refit. She recommissioned on November 15 and sailed for Vera Cruz on December 8th, 1847 as part of Operation Cerrido. On January 26, 1850 Commodore James K. Polk ordered the USS Constitution to steam back to Plymouth Sound after stopping at San Francisco Bay in order to receive supplies from Mexico City before sailing for Havana Harbor on February 10th. After reaching Havana Harbor on February 10th she underwent repairs there until March 4th when she sailed back to Plymouth Sound where she arrived on March 5th.

The city of Amherst, Ohio is located in the southwestern corner of Ohio and is bordered by the states of Kentucky and Indiana. Founded by a group of settlers in 1812, Amherst was one of the early settlements in what would become the United States. Due to its location, Amherst has been variously known as The Promised Land, Shepherds Hearth, or The Granite City. At one time it was home to an estimated 120 businesses and 1,000 residents. In 1925, when Cleveland became the capital of Ohio, Amherst became the third largest city in that state. Today, Amherst remains a vibrant community with a rich history that can be enjoyed today as well as when it was first established over two hundred years ago. Amherst began as a small agricultural town situated on high ground between two valleys which were then used for hunting and gathering purposes by local Native Americans. By 1812 many Dutch-American settlers had arrived in America and began to settle in what is now central Ohio; among these were Johannes van der Kolk and his brother Cornelius van der Kolk who founded the town of Onondaga on November 15th 1812 from their farmstead at Point Lookout near Buffalo Niagara Falls. This site would later become part of downtown Cleveland where Van der Kolk's daughter married into a wealthy family there in 1857. In 1795 John Crampton purchased 4 acres (1 km²) northwest of present-day Amherst for $3 per acre (0·9 hectares). This lot would form part of what would eventually become downtown Cleveland which Crampton named "Clevelandburgh." In 1830 Joshua Henschel donated 9 acres (3 ha) east side of Euclid Road across from Pickering Cemetery to build a schoolhouse; this structure would serve as both school Administrative Building until 1931 when it was moved to 216 E 12th St., now occupied by Mercy Hospital In 1865 Elisha Porter donated land comprising parts of present day East Side streets between Fifth Avenue South & Euclid Avenue North for public square; this square also served as parade ground during 1860s Civil War Battle Of Bunker Hill On October 6th 1868 Samuel Morse donated land comprising parts east sideof First Street between Euclid Avenue North & Superior Street for use as Agricultural Experiment Station; this facility continues operation today under name Laboratory Research Service laboratories In 1899 Anthony Jealous donation consisting mostly eastern halfof Second Street between Superior Street & Main Street gave rise to University Heights neighborhood which still contains much vestigial evidence from original survey date January 27th 1800 including 2 large piers found bearing date December 14th 1800 just southwest corner OF parcel now housing Bank Of America building In 1925 after becoming known as "The Promised Land" due to its location within easy reach for many people seeking refuge during World War II following The Great Depressionmany businesses relocated here such as Zumwalt Paper Company Incorporated (later renamed Drexelusion) along with other heavy industry such as Rubbermaid Incorporated (later renamed Rubbermaid/Parmesan Plastics), Singer Sewing Machine Company Incorporated(later renamed Singer), Whetstone Lumber Company(later renamed Whetstone), Allis Chalmers Mfg Co.(later renamed American Iron Works), Federal Pipe Line Corporation lacquered steel products factory etc Today while not matching historic values all business have relocated back indoors or are taking steps towards doing so like Zanussi Pizza located just south off I-670 exit ramp next door also open 24 hrs
Amherst, Ohio was founded by George Washington in 1792. It became a college town after the University of Michigan moved to Amherst in 1827. The townsite for Amherst was located on the east side of the Scioto River, between today's Elmwood and South Miami streets. In 1836, the town was renamed Pleasant Valley after John Quincy Adams' daughter-in-law, Sarah Fairfax Pleasant.
