Amherst, Ohio is a small town in the U.S. state of Ohio. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census, down from 2,027 at the 2000 census. Amherst is part of the Columbus metropolitan area. It lies on the Scioto River between Athens and Palestine Counties east of Cleveland and west of Ashtabula County in northeastern Ohio. The first settler in what is now Amherst was Nicholas Flournoy who arrived in 1796 from Rhode Island. He built a log cabin near present-day Amherst and made his land public domain in 1811 to allow others to commence development. By 1815, Amos Barnes had started trading posts near modern-day Amherst with Native Americans for goods such as maize and war paint before becoming one of the first white men to own property hereabouts. In 1821, John Dennison purchased 640 acres (248 ha) along both banks of the Scioto River for $5 per acre ($140 per ha). The Dennisons were early settlers in what would become known as Butlers Township; they later donated additional land to form Muskegon Heights Township which included much of today's downtownAmherst." In 1825, James Ketchum founded Ketchum & Company which became one of America's leading salt production companies with its main plant located on Elm Street between Third Street and Fourth Street in downtownAmherst until it closed operations in 1979." In 1830s Darius Noyes began developing what is now North Main Street into a commercial center by building several large buildings including a brick courthouse that still stands today (now occupied by Preble County Court House). A canal was built through town connecting the Scioto River upstream with Lake Erie allowing easy access for shipping and commerce during this time period." A post office called "Amherst" was established on July 10, 1840 under territorial government control but it remained open only six months due to lack of resources within town limits." In 1842 John Cramer opened a millinery shop at 315 Main Street which continued operation until 1865 when it moved out onto High Hill Road where it remains today.( Now known as Gibson’s Department Store) On February 15th 1861 township trustees recommended that annexation be granted to Amhersisto Lucasville because its population had grown too large for their growing township without annexing it." In 1863 Amos Barnes donated 3/4 acre (0.16 ha) north side lot on corner First Avenue and State streets for use as an academy school(now Univeristy Park),later renamed Western Reserve Academy."" Town officials also voted unanimously to award $10 per capita tax relief annually to farmers residing withinTownship boundaries; this measure helped spur agricultural growth withinthetown during these years."" In 1870 George Washington Carver settled across river from city Limits contributing significantly towards urban growth northeastofCleveland while agricultural expansion continued primarily within original Townsquare centered around MainStreetandState Streets ." At some point prior thereto developers changed name of business districts surrounding Center Square district -perhaps because many businesses relocated away from downtown amsterdamization?"
