The Ohio National Guard was organized on May 25, 1921 as part of the United States War Department. The national guard was initially made up of state militias and local police forces. On November 1, 1932, the organization became a separate military branch with an own president and secretary. Alliance is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio, on the southern edge of the Cleveland metropolitan area. The population was 507 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Akron-Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what became Alliance was James Witherspoon, who came to explore land near present-day Lucasville in 1792. In 1801, Witherspoon and his brother John founded an agricultural settlement on what would become Alliance's east side just south of modern day Estrada Boulevard and Clinton Avenue. By 1830, Alliance had a school, post office and small brewery with six barrels of beer per capita. In 1835, William Horsley built a gristmill on Clinton Avenue which became one of the most important commercial businesses in town. The Griggs Mill products included flour for local bakeries as well as whiskey for Buffalo Trace Distillery (now Beam Inc.). In 1868, Cyrus McCormick established his gristmill here that would produce malt for brewing companies such as Anheuser-Busch and Schlitz Brewing Company (now Heineken). Alliance was incorporated as a village on April 12, 1903 by act of the Ohio General Assembly; it became a city on December 1st of that year by resolution passed by Mayor Fenton Youngblood and adopted by City Council members Saundrae Fowler et al.. On July 16th 1994 when Cleveland announced its intention to merge with Allentown to form "a new global center", Alliance voted against merger becoming part of Cleveland but chose not to secede from the city limits instead choosing to annex portions of neighboring townships including Mentor (incorporating parts of Abington Heights) and Defenbaugh Township (incorporating parts of Fairview Heights). This annexation left Alliance with an overall population size larger than that now enjoyed by either Cleveland or Allentown combined!

The Akron, Ohio area has been inhabited by the Shawnee and Potawatomi nations for more than 350 years. The first white settlers arrived in what is now Akron in 1795. The area was originally part of the Northwest Territory under British rule. In 1803, the United States acquired it as part of the Louisiana Purchase. The city of Akron was founded in 1836, and growth followed throughout the next century. In 1959, Cleveland-based manufacturer Carrier Corporation agreed to build a new plant inAkron that would create over 1,000 jobs. However, because of unions seeking to protect their jobs, production at the plant did not begin until 1984 and only lasted for eight months. This created a problem for Mayor Dennis Kucinich who had called for an investigation into whether or not Carrier had violated labor laws by refusing to hire Latino workers. Ultimately, no charges were filed but public anger over the company’s treatment of employees led to its stock price dropping 50%. In 2002, following World Trade Center disaster which killed almost 3000 people and injured many more, Ohio Governor Ted Strickland designated Akron as one of five cities across America that were selected as finalists for a “city rebuilt through partnerships” program administered by FEMA. With nearly $100 million available from HUD through various programs such as direct spending caps on local governments and block grants to cities with specific needs after 9/11/, Akron became one of just three American cities awarded funding totaling $27 million+ total from HUD during 2005-2007 (the other two recipients were Philadelphia and Baltimore). The city also received awards from ULI Americas – one of the largest professional organizations devoted to urban planning – in 2006 as well as being recipient of two statewide “Urban Land Prize” Awards from Ohio State University Extension Service earlier this year (2006).
