Alliance is a city in the northern part of Ohio, United States. The population was 10,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was platted in 1827 and named for General David Johnston, an American general who fought in the Mexican-American War and was later made president of Mexico City. In 1812, Ohio was part of the United States of America. The area that is now Alliance, Ohio was then called Nipponago Township. On November 3, 1812, President James K. Polk signed a bill creating the state of Ohio and giving it to Ohio’s western neighbor Indiana. The new state included land east of the Allegheny Mountains and north of the Great Lakes. This left Nipponago Township in Indiana with no choice but to join the new state or leave it behind. On December 12, 1812, the township voted to remain in Indiana and became part of that state’s growing population. The first settler in Alliance was George Whitefield who arrived in 1792. He built a cabin on what is now Springboro Road on his family’s farmstead which he named Whitefield Manor after himself and his father-in-law (the man who owned most of what is now Alliance). whitefield worked hard to provide for his community and many residents still live on their farms today. In 1814, when force Majeure caused by a severe ice storm forced General Anthony Wayne to withdraw from the American Civil War, Alliance offered its services as an army garrison until relieved by troops under General John Pope at Cumberland Gap on October 25th 1865. Since becoming an unincorporated community in 1919, Alliance has experienced steady growth through efforts by its citizenry led by local leaders like Dr Julie Kappelman who has spearheaded fund raising drives for several important projects such as building a library and addition to town hall as well as revamping Main Street into a more pedestrian friendly environment; work that continues today!
