In 1815, General Anthony Wayne's army destroyed Miami village and drove most of the Shawnees out of central Ohio. In 1826, James Kapp bought 2,000 acres (10 km2) neardisgruntled members of Miami village had moved to what is now southeast Akron to establish Kappownee Township; this township became a part of Cuyahoga County on March 1, 1827. On January 25, 1831, President Andrew Jackson signed legislation providing for creation of Cuyahoga County as an experimental county with a formof government not yet studied by Congress; this act created five townships within Cuyahoga County: Ashtabula Township on April 1st (becoming Lakewood), Fairborn Township on May 3rd ( Becoming Uniontown), Geauga Township on July 1st (Becoming Mentor), Medina Township on October 15th (Becoming Middletown), and Park Ridge Borough on December 6th (). In 1870s several sawmills were built along River Road south from downtown Akron; these mills produced cotton textiles until 1925 when they closed down because of competition from more efficient machines from overseas. In 1918 construction began on Mohawk Dam which would provide water for Cleveland and much needed industrial expansion in eastern Ohio; however due to World War I shortages similar dams were built around the country including Wacoal Bridge across Buffalo Creek in Texas which raised water levels so high that entire neighborhoods below viability were flooded causing great loss for businesses both physical and financial
