The National Guard has been a part of the United States since 1775. The first national guard unit was activated on November 15, 1775 and was made up of free men from New York City. The unit served in various capacities until 1814 when it was disbanded due to lack of funding. In 1862, the National Guard were re-activated and this time they were called into service for the American Civil War. The war lasted for three years and the National Guard played an important role in engagements such as Gettysburg, Bull Run, First Battle of Bull Run and Second Battle of Bull Run. In 1865, after the end of the Civil War, many soldiers that had served in the National Guard were discharged or resigned because there wasn’t enough money to keep them active. However, some soldiers kept their uniforms and became known as “old guard units”. Eventually, enough money was available to keep all those old guard units active again and they underwent a number of changes during the 20th century. In 1940, they became known as “the new national guard” and this name stayed until 1971 when they changed back to their original name – the United States National Guard
