The area that now constitutes Akron was first inhabited by the Algonquian people (who were speakers of Iroquois) around 1000 BC. The area was later part of the Confederation of American States in 1787 after George Washington's victory over France in the Battle of Yorktown. In 1814, when General Andrew Jackson defeated Tecumseh at Monmouth County Fairgrounds in what is known as "the Black Hawk War", he captured Fort Mifflin which became known as Jackson's Fortress. Afterward, Anthony Wayne took control of parts of central Ohio until 1825 when he ceded all but about 8 miles (12 km) east of Cleveland to James K. Polk in what is known as "the Great Lakes Treaty". During World War II, Akron became an important center for munitions production due to its proximity to Munitions Plant No. 1 on Monmouth Road near downtown Akron; plant operations continued until 1949 when they were moved to Springfield Armory in nearby Massillon because of increased security requirements following World War II. In 1959, local business owner John Elway founded the Golden Corral restaurant chain with locations throughout northwestern Ohio; during their heyday from the late 1960s through early 1990s there were more than 350 Elway restaurants across America employing some 120% or moreOhioans working at them full time or part time! All told about 30% percentof UAW Local 2700 members worked inside Elway restaurants! In 2002–2003 developers proposed planning changes that would have eliminated much of downtown's historic architecture while proposing new high rises along Ravenna Avenue; these proposals failed after public outcry led by then Mayor Frank Gaffney who characterized them as an attempt by developers to rewrite history without considering community input or concerns about impact on cultural heritage sites like Grandma's Place restaurant which operated adjacent to Planks Arts District for many years before being evicted in 2001–2002 because its landlord wanted higher property values than could be generated by additional businesses within walking distance (see "The Ravenna Corridor Plan" below). In response Gaffney formed a coalition called Downtown Akron Partnership which successfully lobbied City Council not only to reject these plans but also announced plans for $10 million worth of renovations targeting antique shops/markets along Elmwood Avenue between Third Street and Fourth Street – one such project has already been completed! This past year saw another major development with plans for $100 million dollars from PNC Bank for development near Interstate 71 just east of downtown – this project will include 3 million square feet (290 thousand sq m) office space along with 2 million square feet (20 thousand sq m) residential units – making it one half mile wide (.5 km!) long! This large scale redevelopment plan would represent a dramatic change for downtown which has seen very few significant developments since gentrification began around 2000!!! Downtown Development LLC., -a company controlled by billionaire real estate developer Bruce Ratner-announced earlier this year they are moving forward with preliminary design work on a mixed use complex containing retail spaces above luxury apartments slated to open next fall called One World Center!! It seems clear that big box retailers are no longer enough to keep pace with rising housing prices………nor are they compatible with how 21st century cities should function!!! 1) From 9000 BC until 100 AD land within present day Akron was occupied intermittently by various Algonquian groups including those who spoke Ohiopylean languages today’s Shawnee Nation[2] 2 Some early historians believed that Ohiopylean speakers had come ashore from Georgian Bay sometime before 1000 BC[3] However most recent scholarship suggests that this group arrived approximately 1075 AD[4][5]

Akron, Ohio is a city in the southern region of Ohio. The population was 97,898 at the 2000 census and was projected to reach 103,365 by 2010. It is the county seat of Summit County. The city is located on the southern edge of Akron Peninsula on Lake Erie. The first permanent settler in what is now Akron was John Cleaveland in 1792. In 1803, he named it "Akron," after General Andrew Jackson's army destroyed Fort Dearborn during the War of 1812. In 1836, Cleveland became capital of Ohio and Akron became its second city. The two cities formed an alliance in 1847 and were designated as a consolidated city-county under one government with a single budget and police force. In 1907, Akron became part of the United States following passage of the National Defense Act; it had been part of both Michigan Territory (1802) and Indiana Territory (1805). The act gave Ohio statehood and made it a district bordering Indiana and Michigan Territory. With this change came added responsibilities for Akron: managing water supplies for all three districts; providing education, health care, fire protection services and other civic functions within state boundaries; developing commuter rail service between Cleveland, Detroit, Cincinnati and other large urban centers; marketing local produce to eastern markets; etc.; all external activities that would continue until 1959 when statehood turned over all municipal functions to Greater Cleveland Incorporated as an autonomous First District municipality within the new regional government known as "Cleveland." In 1913–14 there was significant development around Euclid Avenue in downtown which included construction ofAkron State Fairgrounds Lodge #1 (now One Federal Plaza), American Legion Post No. 214 (now DTE Energy Tower), Race Street School Annex Building #2 also known as “The White House” Municipal Auditorium (later One Washington Square), Akron Civic Theatre…all keyed towards creating what is now called “the downtown area” around Euclid Avenue/9th Street NW between Superior AvenueNW and Elmwood RoadNW which stretching from Euclid Ave./Avenue NW to Mason RoadEOW constitutes today's Midtown district of Downtown Akron with many major businesses like PNC bank warehouse near 9th St., US Bank near Superior Ave., Jussie Smollett Complex inside former AIG building across Superior Ave., plus several small blocks NE off 9th St., including nano-tech startup accelerator Kent State University's Joe Louis Arena parking lot next door along with several high-end restaurants recently opened like Larkinese Garden & Market Place right outside Mayor David Condon's home just east on Willow Rd./Greencastle Blvd from Second District HQ - once considered 'Downtown' center but current 'Midtown' district overall thanks to much redevelopment effort by City Council + extensive funding from Tax increment financing program administered by City Manager
