On February 3rd, 1840, voters chose George Morris as their new Village President after his successful run for office against incumbent Elijah Bickerton Jr.. On October 1st 1840 an act was presented to the General Assembly providing for township organization with voting privileges due every five years instead of annually like villages had been operated previously; this act served as law until it was repealed by Act No 973 on July 15th 1959

It became a manufacturing center due to its location at the confluence of two great rivers-the Muskingum and the Cuyahoga. In 1801, General William Henry Harrison moved his army from Greenville, SC to become President of the United States and he called on Congress to provide him with an army to lead against Mexico. As a result, Congress passed the War Department Act which provided for 10,000 acres (40 km²) of land east of the Monongahela River be designated as Military reservation number 4. On July 16th, 1802, General Andrew Jackson arrived in town with 1,500 soldiers and took up residence in what is now First National Bank Building. The first courthouse was built on Main Street in 1809-10.
