The name Williston comes from WILLIAMSTOWN on the Missouri River, where pioneer families settled in the mid-19th century. In 1881, William Denny founded the city of Fargo and named it for his father-in-law, John A. Willison. The city grew rapidly and by 1890 had a population of over 100,000 people. In 1903, Fargo became an independent city and Williston lost its status as the county seat.
