Williston is a city in Cannon County, North Dakota, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. The community was founded in 1881 by Norwegian immigrants and became an agricultural center in the area. It has been home to the Williston Air Force Base since 1941. The community was platted on October 12, 1881, by John A. Dickey and named for Lieutenant General Alfred P. Smith (1820-1885), of the Union Army who had fought in Mexico and Texas against Mexico's Santa Anna Expedition and later served as commissioner of Indian Affairs under US President James K. Polk (1845-1917). In 1907, Williston became a town when it annexed nearby Park City. In 1951, the Air Force Base was transferred from Kansas Air National Guard to Cannon County as part of base realignment provisions of the USAF base closing program which included closure of many American airports including Wichita Municipal Airport and Topeka Municipal Airport. The townspeople successfully lobbied for a new airport to be built within their boundaries adjacent to their existing airport with plans for its construction starting immediately following completion of the original airport project which would have allowed for reuse of runway 7L/29R formerly used by Topeka Municipal Airport which had closed citing budgetary concerns associated with increased traffic levels caused by USAF air activity at then-new Wichita Municipal Airport not being able to feasiblely accommodate increased demand from USAF personnel stationed at then-new Cannon Air Force Base during early 21st century global war II hostilities through 1945 despite budget increases resulting from War Powers Act amendments implemented in 1942 due to newly declared: World War II European allies' declaration of war on America; follow up Japanese invasion forces landing on Iwo Jima on September 2nd 1944; Korean War armistice Agreement signed September 9th 1950; demilitarized zone established between South Korea and North Korea effective February 27th 1953]]. After more than 15 years without any new development occurring near or inside former "Air Force Base Kansas", cannon county officials announced they were initiating a land purchase program that would provide access to over 11 square miles located east/west across aerial runway 7L/29R now owned by Wichita Municipal Airport expansion project - making future development possible not only within Cannon County limits but adjoining Riley County proper also serving as potential "Gateway" location becoming even more important due thereto because there are now major trucking routes connecting these two rural counties providing significant economic opportunity both locally & nationally.]].
The first white men to settle in the area were the Wilmot brothers, who arrived in 1872. A post office was established at Williston in 1889, and by 1912 there were three businesses at the town. The population increased rapidly after World War I, as farmers brought their livestock and crops to the new land. In 1919 the state legislature designated Williston a city, and it grew even more quickly during prohibition years. The city government was disbanded in 1972, but the name has been used sporadically ever since as a word of derision for alcoholics or others depicted as failures.
