On May 1, 2009, Williston voters passed an ordinance that established a school district within Chisago County which would serve as the cornerstone for what would become one of North Dakota's largest school districts. As part of this plan to consolidate schools in rural counties into large districts across North Dakota and Minnesota so students could have more choice in where they attend school and receive better education opportunities, Williston will be served by four elementary schools: Williston Elementary School; White Sands Elementary School; East Side Elementary School; and South Hills Middle/High School - which will open its doors to students from PreK through 8th grade on September 8th 2020. The consolidation also includes the construction of two high schools - Williston High School & Chinook Valley High School - which will open their doors to students from 9th through 12th grades on October 3rd 2021 . In addition to these new buildings there are also plans for land acquisition totaling over 100 acres (40 hectares) that will house community colleges and vocational training facilities as well as recreational areas including an arena capable seating 710 people and a golf course capable seating 6800 people
