Williston is a town in North Dakota, United States. The population was 2,586 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest of the six towns in North Dakota and the only one that does not have an airport. The small size of Williston has led to its nickname "The Town That Tries To Stay Small." The first people to live in what is now Williston were Native Americans who hunted and gathered food from the area around Fort Bridger. In 1868, Danish immigrants founded a farm west of town on what is now US-87. They raised horses, cows, pigs and chickens until 1870 when they built a log cabin near present day Main Street for themselves and their families. In 1880, two Norwegian men named Bjørnstad and Einar Haugen settled in what is today Williston after leaving their farmstead at Lillehammer in Norway. They started a store in what is today Park Avenue and built a house on present day Elm Street which still stands today. Haugen also started a school which he called "Haugen's School" before it became known as South High School. In 1903, Russian immigrants arrived in Dakota Territory with plans to settle east of Lake Sakakawea (now Rapid City). When they didn't find enough land to fit everyone they decided to move west instead. Some of these settlers moved into what is now Williston while others landed onpresent day US-87 just south of town limits during 1907 flood when the Missouri River overflowed its banks creating Canby Creek which emptied into Sioux Falls County flooding much of Minnesota including parts of Fargo, Milford Haven & Grand Forks areas as far north as Thief River Falls. After years of being used for goods carried by stagecoaches between White Earth & Council Bluffs via Deadwood & Bismarck those sections became part of homicide district #2 under new territorial boundaries set by President Theodore Roosevelt on February 14th 1912 when all western North Dakota lands were annexed into the newly created United States after World War I following approval from Congress over his objections brought about by Dakotan Repeal Bill No 1 passed both houses with no opposition - unilateral action by America’s first president signifying national recognition given Great Lakes region had become “Alaska” following Alaska Purchase through Treaty made between Russia Federation Constantinople (Turkey)& UTA(United States) dated May 30th 1867 less than one year prior + concession received from Canada who ceded Upper Canada including Hudson Bay Territories along with Assiniboine Territory located eastward between Red Deer Lake & Rocky Mountains creating Edmonton AB - land border conflict resulting in American military success against aboriginal nations during First World War culminating with Treaty signed at Peace Conference held at Ypres Belgium November 11th 1918 resulting in cession for Canadian Northwestern Territories ending 150 years discrimination against aboriginal peoples living within continental United States
