The Coast Guard operates in the United States and Canada as a national security force. The Coast Guard has been providing service to the people of these countries for over 100 years. In 1934, the Coast Guard donated its first Cutter, USCGC Griffin, to the West Fargo Yacht Club. The cutter was used for community service and ceremonial purposes. In 1957, the Coast Guard donated their second Cutter, USCGC Foegele, to the club. The cutter was used for racing and other activities around town. In 1969, the Coast Guard donated their third Cutter, USCGC Onondaga, to the club. This cutter was used for fishing tournaments and other events. In 1981, the Coast Guard donated their fourth Cutter, USCG Little John II., to the club. This cutter was used for fishing tournaments and other events around town. In 1996-1997, they donated two more Cutsters- USCG Yorktown (CVA-8) and USCG Sagamore (CVA-19). These boats were used in SAR operations off of coastlines in Minnesota and Wisconsin with great success! In 2004-2005 they donation of a fifth Cutter- CGV Cherokee (CVA-5) made waves in our community because it is one of only three RIBs that are still operational on Lake Superior! This boat is also being usage by our Marine unit as an assist vessel during local search and rescue missions! The Coast Guard gift history in West Fargo, North Dakota begins with Captain John H. Smith who served from 1913 to 1922. He was followed by Captain Clarence W. Kapp who served from 1923 to 1928. From 1929 to 1944, Captain Harry A. Foust served as the Commandant and then Commodore Charles Fenton took over in 1945. In 1946 Commodore George W Pederson relieved Commodore Fenton and continued service until 1969 when he retired at the age of 70 years old. From 1970 to 1974, Lieutenant Colonel James Pugh served as Commandant and then Commander in Chief until his retirement at the age of 80 years old in 1978. Since 1978,Commandant Charles Fenton's successor is Lieutenant Colonel James Pugh who continues service until his retirement in 2018 at the age of 86 years old.
In the year 1881, when Fargo was founded by Norwegian immigrants, it was an unincorporated community located on the banks of the Missouri River. Today, West Fargo is a thriving community with a population of over 20,000 people and growing businesses. The area has been called “The Gateway to the Dakotas” and is home to many cultural attractions including the world-renowned Fargo Art Museum and Sculpture Garden. It was founded on July 16, 1914 when a group of American sailors banded together to help prevent collisions between vessels and shorelines. The Coast Guard’s mission is to provide safe and efficient travel and trade within our country’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). Today, the Coast Guard provides protection for more than 9,500 miles of coastline and waters throughout the continental United States. Its missions include coastal security, search and rescue, maritime law enforcement, fisheries management, environmental stewardship, recreational boating safety and navigation. In addition to its core responsibilities within the EEZ boundaries it also responds to requests from other countries in the region including Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, Guam and Japan. In honor of its centennial anniversary this year we are honoring coast guard gift history with a retrospective article on some of the most popular gifts that have been given to members of the Coast Guard over time. On December 15, 1941 the United States Coast Guard was created as a result of the National Defense Act. By 1942, the Coast Guard had a staff of 28 officers and men. The first directive from Congress ordering the creation of the Coast Guard stated "the coast guard shall be so furnished as to enable it to carry out its duties with efficiency and effectiveness." The first commissioned officer in the Coast Guard was Samuel P. French on January 5, 1943. The first ship captained by an American was USCGC Porpoise on May 14, 1946. In 1947, Congress authorized CG procurement of helicopters which would continue until 1958 when all helicopter activity was discontinued due to budget cuts. Since then there have been numerous purchases totaling over $5 billion for various purposes including maritime security and coastal surveillance missions along with construction projects such as new lighthouses and bridges.
West Fargo was first established in 1881 as a small town on the banks of the Missouri River. The area that is now West Fargo was settled by Norwegian immigrants who had come to North Dakota during the 1880s. The town grew rapidly and by 1905, it had become an important commercial center on the river. By 1920, West Fargo had surpassed Minot as the largest city in North Dakota. In World War II, West Fargo became one of the most significant military locations in the United States because of its position on the then- strategically important river corridor. The community played a vital role in providing food and ammunition for American forces during World War II, and it also served as an airfield for Bomber Command during this time period. After the war, West Fargo experienced a significant growth spurt due to its strategic location and new economic opportunities. In 1970, it became part of Dickinson County and has since been Struve's primary seat of government. Today, West Fargo remains an important cultural and commercial center within Dickinson County; its historic district is listed on both the National Register of Historic Places and contains some of Dickinson County's most iconic buildings such as those located at 10th Street & US 2nd Avenue (the original courthouse). Additionally, many residents continue to commute to larger municipalities such as Minot or Sioux Falls via Interstate 90 or State Highway 11.
In 1885, the Fargo Railroad was built between Fargo and Devils Lake. The railroad allowed goods to be transported from Minnesota to North Dakota quickly and cheaply. The Fargo-Mandan Hotel was the first hotel in North Dakota and served as a stop on the railroad.
