The first policemen in Minot were a group of eight men from Omaha, Nebraska that arrived on horseback to help with law enforcement in the small town. In 1886, a new courthouse and jail were built and the city added its first fire department. In 1907, Minot became an incorporated town and a new police department was created. On July 1st of that year, Mayor Henson donated a motorcycle to the department as part of their gift to society. The department continued to grow over time and in 1912 they acquired their own station wagon which allowed them to offer more services to the community at large. On December 15th of that year, Mayor Womack gifted two patrol cars to the department as part of their Christmas present for service within the community. That same year saw another major donation when Mrs. Clements donated $5000 toward building a new library which would serve all of Minot including downtown and north side. On October 3rd of 1913, mayor Fenton gave one thousand rounds of ammunition to the department for use during World War I when America entered into war against Germany In 1922-1923 there was much discussion around whether or not Minot should become an independent city due to problems such as lack of funding from state government On January 5th 1923 Mayor Kapp dedicatedMinOT'SFirstPoliceStationWagontoTheCityForServiceWithinTheCommunity One hundred years later on September 1st 2019 City Manager Don Dockery dedicated our newest Police Stationwagon - Jubilee Edition - inside City Hall following many years hard work by countless officers & citizens . The city was named after Minot A. H., an American businessman who helped promote mining in what is now North Dakota and developed important lumber interests there. In 1951, Minot became one of four cities located within Grand Forks, ND; concurrent with this change, it annexed part of neighboring Steele County which had been separate from Cass County since 1912. In 2001, both Steele County and Cass County were combined into one unified government under the name "Cass County". Since World War II, Minot has been home to many defense installations including two Air Force bases and three Navy shipsyards - all founded during or shortly after World War II. Today much of these military infrastructure remains in use but also includes various businesses that support local government functions such as law enforcement and public works. Additionally, several colleges and universities are located in or around Minot including Dickinson State University (the main campus), North Dakota State University-Bismarck (a research university), Fargo-Moorhead Technical College (a vocational school), and Grand Forks Community College District #1 (the largest community college district in ND).
