The Minot Army Base was home to the United States Pacific Theater of World War II from 1942-1945. The base was closed in 1945 and all of its equipment, including the arsenal, were sold to the Canadian Forces. The Canadian Forces used part of the arsenal until 1970 when it was donated to North Dakota State University for research purposes. In 1976, NDSU President Dr. Robert L. Nye presented a gift of munitions and other military equipment to the Minot Army Base Museum in return for an oral history interview with General Leslie R. McNair Jr., commander of U.S Military Forces Europe during World War II. The museum has since been open to the public as a nonprofit educational institution located on campus adjacent to the old armory where General McNair lived and worked from 1946-1948
