They were seeking new land for their herd of beef cows and realized that the area around Mandan had rich coal deposits. On October 2, 1907 they founded the Mandan Coal Mining Company with Wm Hennelly as president and C P Hannum as secretary/treasurer/director. The history of the Mandan, North Dakota community started with the arrival of white settlers in 1876. The area that is now known as Mandan was first settled by the Sioux and Cheyenne. In 1881, gold was discovered in what is now North Dakota and pressure began to be put on the Sioux and Cheyenne to sell their land to developers. In 1907, a group of Native American men from Mandan traveled down South Dakota's Missouri River to find new land for their people. They were successful in finding a tract of land bounded by present-day Spearfish County on the east, Wanakai County on the west, Cannonball County on the south, and Jackson County on the north. The men named their new community after Chief Red Cloud ofthe Lakota People who had led them in their previous explorations into this part of South Dakota. In 1915, when World War I began, many people from Mandan decided to join up with other American forces fighting in Europe. Most of these soldiers returned home before hostilities ended but some did stay behind and continue farming until 1919 when they received an allotment from United States government for $1 per acre. From then until 1941, no real development took place inMandan; most residents simply became self-sufficient farmers. However, during World War II more than 2,000 Mandans enlisted in the military and served alongside other Dakotas as well as those from Minnesota and Wisconsin. Many veterans returned home after war ended but many also remained living off provisions they acquired while serving abroad. In 1949 it was announced that North Dakota would become an official state within America; this event marked a change for both Mandan’s citizens and its economy which evolved slowly over time into what it is today: A locally owned business community reliant on its own resources rather than outside assistance or funding
In 1881, the Sioux Confederacy ceded their land to the United States in what is known as the Sioux Cession. The United States government then created a reservation for the Sioux in northeast North Dakota. The area now includes Mandan, North Dakota. In 1902, the United States Supreme Court ruled that the reservation was unconstitutional and it was abolished.
