The Coast Guard in Mandan, North Dakota has been providing service to the community for over 100 years. The Coast Guard was established on February 14, 1915 as a result of the Panama-Pacific War. At that time the United States had just entered World War I and needed help with Customs and Revenueguard duties on the West Coast. The first CG was Captain John Vickers who served until 1919 when he was named Commandant. Captain Harry Jorgenson took command in1920 and led the CG through many challenges during World War II including Operation Neptune’s Spear which destroyed Japanese forces at Pearl Harbor. After World War II Captain John Halliday served as Commandant until his death in 1973. In 1978 Captain Rick Hubbard became Commandant and led the CG through another difficult era; after Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans he called for all members of the CG to come to Mandan to help rebuild. Since then, things have really started to improve withCaptain Don Christensen coming into office in 2006 and leading the CG until his retirement in 2011. There are now three officers responsible for running the CG; Special Agent James McGrath (Operations), Master Marlin Riggs (Administration) and First Class Jeffery Dvorak (law enforcement). Each officer is responsible for a certain aspect of their job such as morale, education, training and equipment procurement/maintenance/repair/new construction/assistance from outside agencies etc.. Today, it is clear that Coast Guard service is essential to both local communities and our nation’s security.
