In 1876, a group of men from Jamestown, North Dakota started the first commercial coffee plantation in that area. The enterprise was called the "Jamestown Coffee Company." The first crop of beans was grown in 1877 and money was made from selling coffee to local merchants. By 1880, the Jamestown Coffee Company had expanded its operations to include another four plantations. Coffee production continued to grow throughout the 20th century. In 1958, a new plant was built at Fruitland near Fargo. This facility allowed for increased production and made it possible for Jamestown Coffee Company to become one of the largest coffee companies in the world. Beginning in 2006, Jamestown Coffee Company began importing Indonesian coffees into North Dakota under the brand name "Indonesian Star." This new venture helped to reduce prices on coffee while also providing an opportunity forlocal farmers to sell their products directly to consumers. As part of this initiative,the company has donated over 1 million pounds of fresh beans each year to local food banks and homeless shelters across North Dakota since 2007.

The following year, Congress created Dakota Territory and established Jamestown as its territorial capital. The British took over Dakota Territory in 1858 and abandoned it in 1862. After the American Civil War ended, Dakota Territory was redesignated Montana Territory. In 1890, Montana Territory was divided into two parts: North Dakota and South Dakota. North Dakota became an independent state in 1912 and South Dakota did the same in 2016.

Jamestown was founded in 1871 by Captain John Smith and his team of settlers on the banks of the Missouri River. The small fort served as a trading post and military base during the early days of the Dakota Territory. The first permanent settler families arrived in 1872, and by 1881, Jamestown had become a major commercial center with a population of around 100. In 1912, Jamestown was renamed Fort Pierre to honor its incorporation into the United States as a territory. It remained an American military outpost until 1959, when it became an operating base for the North Dakota National Guard. The history of Jamestown is reflective of that of many frontier communities across America during the late 19th century. It was built on strong foundation: Smith had already established himself as a leading figure in eastern North Dakota society before he set out for what would be his final round of exploration and settlement in what is now Montana. Heading westward from present-day Fargo, he believed that this new land could provide him with wealth and opportunity beyond anything he’d experienced previously. And so it did – at least initially. Despite initial difficulties (such as being hit by lightning three times), Smith eventually amassed an impressive collection of Native American artifacts, livestock, plants and minerals while developing what would become one of North Dakota’s most important economic hubs. By 1881, Jamestown had become home to over 200 people; within just 10 years it had achieved significant stature both within North Dakota itself and among adjacent states – becoming one of America’s earliest regional centers for commerce and industry. Thanks in part to its location on the riverine plain between two great Sioux Nation reservations – Great Lakes Dells to the north and Standing Rock Sioux Reservation to the south – Jamestown quickly emerged as one of America’s most important transportation routes linking interior Minnesota with points eastward along Lake Superior. And so it grew: businesses moved into town from outside sources (eager consumers looking for good Indian goods); infrastructure was built; jobs were created; social life took root; burgeoning populations attracted newcomers who helped drive development forward through their own interests and investment opportunities… all while maintaining core values such as self-reliance, communityhard work ethic, openhandedness towards others, etcetera (Falkenstein 1985). As JamestOWN grew large enough to support more than just its original hundred or so citizens in 1881-1892*, other settlements followed suit: Aberdeen (1901), Great Falls (1902), Minot (1903), Rapid City (1904), Wounded Knee(1894) & Pine Ridge(1945). Many aspects characteristic behaviorally oreconomically at these later sites can be traced back directly or indirectly to pioneer culture here at Jamestown* (*see article “Origins Of contemporary rural life InNorthDakota" for more detailed description). For example†† village life slowly evolved from reliance on subsistence husbandry/farming practices**(*see article "Village Life In The Early Days"*) towards township model characterized today by greater reliance upon entrepreneurialism/commerce/services* (* see also comments section below aboutanka's unique history*)…. As new businesses opened up throughout townspeople began seeking out different forms oeconomic competition which naturally led to increased innovation especially where production technology differed greatly from those prevailing at earlier sites….. One result has been increased efficiency not onlyphysically but also economically which has led some contemporary residents even[to] suggest that *the downtown area may still be better off than most city areas [*See sidebar "What Aboutjamstown's Unique History?"*], despite complaints about high prices charged for services rendered…]….. jamsallowed entrepreneurs like Lucky Strike Cigarettes founder David Bauder***(*30 Rock bios*****)to build factories right next door….. This sortofenterprise growth accelerated after World War I whenasinflation made investments difficult***(*Bauder died in 2008)…….. [But] once again technological advances came along [* See sidebar "What Aboutjamstown's Unique History?"*], enablingliability companies like FedEx®, UPS®,and energy providers like Enbridge Energy Corporation*****to establish themselves hereabouts………. Because no single person or company monopolizes everything going on hereabouts [*See sidebar "What Aboutjamowntones Unique History?"*], there are often multiple perspectivesavailable whenever something noteworthy happens or someone wants information about something….. without any centralized control whatsoever…. Consequently *there isn't really much else goingonhereabouts*, other than people living their lives day-by-day tryingto make ends meet………… [emphasis added]
The first permanent English settlement in what is now North Dakota was founded by Captain John C. Fremont on the site of present-day Jamestown in 1868. The town was named for General James K. Polk, who had been president when the United States acquired the area from Mexico. After a brief stay, Fremont's party moved on and established Fort Pierre in 1869.
