The first naval ship to be built in Jamestown, North Dakota was the USS Constitution. The Constitution was a large sailing vessel that served as the navy's flagship from 1795-1802. She was designed by George Washington and construction began on her on November 2, 1795. The Constitution reached her maiden voyage on December 12, 1795 and visited Havana, Cuba on January 3, 1800. On October 16, 1801, she crossed the Atlantic Ocean and arrived at Norfolk Island on November 7th. The Constitution stayed there until May 10th of 1802 when she sailed back home via Portsmouth England and arrived at Yorktown Virginia on May 13th.During her time in service she served under nine different commanders and sank thirteen warships including HMS Guerrière (1798), HMS Candid (1800), HMS releif (1801), HMS Espinosa (1805), HMS Diamond (1807) and HM Sovereigns James & John (1809). Sadly the Constitution broke down after being hit by a lightning bolt while underway off Georgia in 1812 and was never repaired

The Jamestown Settlement was founded by the Dutch in 1624 on the banks of the Missouri River. The settlement was located on land that had been purchased from the Sioux and other Native American groups. The Dutch claimed the area as their proprietary colony, and began construction of a fortification called Fort Christina in 1629. In 1638, English settlers arrived in what is now North Dakota and began to settle the area. The English named their new territory after Lord James II of England, who had died in 1625. In 1639, Fort Christina was renamed Fort Douglass after Douglass County, Maryland, which remained part of British America until 1776. In 1640, a group of English colonists led by Major John Smith built a trading post at Jamestown on the Missouri River. Smith became leader of the English colonists in North Dakota and continued to lead raids against rival Sioux tribes. In 1645, he built a second trading post at Red Lake on the White Earth River. Smith’s outpost became known asJamestown Station because it served as an early center for trade with Indigenous nations in what is now Minnesota and Iowa. In 1646, a group of French Canadians arrived in what is now North Dakota and established laFontaine Settlement near present-day Fargo. LaFontaine soon developed into one of North Dakota’s most successful agricultural settlements with its own market system and large acreage devoted to raising livestock and wheat crops. By 1600, French Canadian traders had extended their trade operations upriver to Great Lakes ports such as Duluth and Chicago). In addition to goods imported from Canada (chiefly fur goods), French Canadian traders also traded goods exported from Swedish Sverige (mainly ammunition) along with fish gleaned from local lakes and rivers
